Madman

Tough call between the Volvo and the Mercedes.  I'd probably lean towards the Volvo since it costs less.  Besides, being a multiple Volvo owner, how could I not stick with the Swede?

Are you retarded? He included a 2005 C230 and a 2004 TL, at which level you can get like a 2004 330i.

I wouldn't really call it a Swede, Madman.  More like a Japanese-American!

You cannot get a 2005 C230 for 20K. And I think he said that he got his car for $24K

24K might get you a high mileage 325.  Not a 330i.

Isn't the Mazda6 based on the Volvo and the Fusion based on the Mazda6?  I think the Volvo is Swedish.

The Mazda3, Euro Focus, and S40/V50 are based on Ford's C1 platform.

Actually, I got my car for $20k; that was 90% of the reason I went ahead and bought it. But to be fair, all the others (including other TL's) run about $24-25k, with the S40 and TSX closer to $23k. At that price, I've seen 2005 325i's and maybe a few 2004 330i's. I didn't get around to test driving them, because:

1. 325i's are slower than C230's
2. I would lose my car in the parking structure at work. Just like all the other poor saps wandering around forgetting where they parked their E46 BMW's
3. E46's are soo 5 years ago. There, I said it.

Of those listed, I'll take the Cadillac CTS.

Wait, what?

If I had $40K to dump into cars, I'd either get an '07 G35S 6spd, or an E36 M3 and some kind of DOHC VTEC Honda

I don't know why there are so many cars missing from the list...

I had  the Volvo and 3 in the shop one time side by side both hit in the front. These two are almost exactly the same other than the exterior sheet metal and interior. I had to keep the parts separated so I wouldn't put the wrong ones on the cars.

At least the engines are easier to keep straight.

You can definitely get an '04 3er, C-class, G35, etc. for $25K. I think my friend got his '04 G35 coupe for about 25K last year.

Sure, it may be the product of a mulitnational conglomerate (what car isn't these days?) but the S40/V50 still displays it Swedish parentage in the areas that really matter; safety, reliability, understated tastefulness and a warmer, more inviting environment and any of it's Germanic counterparts.  Okay, so it's actually built in Ghent, Belgium.  Then again, so was my 740 Turbo and a car really can't get any more Swedish in character that that.

Umm, so let's see.......

It the product of a Swedish subsidiary of an American company co-produced with the European branch of said American company and a partially-owned Japanese affiliate.  It uses a Swedish-made engine (Yay!) and a Japanese transmission (when equipped with an automatic), German electronics and is built in Belgium.

Damn, I sure liked it better back in the good old days when things were simple!

I love how stickshift BMWs command a higher price than automatics. E36 auto M3s cost about 2K less than stickshift ones. But yea that is a nice deal, low 14 second car in stick, and very beautiful
