"A sports car is an automobile designed for performance driving. Most sports cars are rear-wheel drive, have two seats, two doors, and are designed for precise handling, acceleration, and aesthetics."

Doesn't say anything about an open top.

By your logic, a Porsche Cayman isn't a sports car. Nor is a Lotus Exige. And that's just STUPID.

Porsche Cayman isn't a sports car.  Exige has an open top.

And as ifcar has said, many threads have been swallowed up by this argument.  Do as you wish; I will have the comfort of being correct.

GT

Exactly right.

And there's no shame in that.  Some of the best cars in the world are GTs.

I still don't understand why people have such a problem with this.  If I ran around calling my chair a sofa all the time, people would correct me.  That's what you're doing.  You're calling a chair a sofa and you're getting huffy when I tell you that a sofa is a sofa.  There's nothing wrong with being a chair.  Chairs are rather great.  But they are not and never will be sofas.

The sofa chair is a bit of a quandary, though.  ;)

I believe there is an emoticon for this.

We should reword "20. Sports Car (All prices)" as "20. Sports/GT Car (All prices)".

That would shut me up!

Rather than making dozens of different polls, why don't we just do one thread and then manually count up the responses to determine a winner?
Because I'm not stupid.

What does sports car imply?

Sportier than a Grand Touring car, no doubt. Grand Touring makes me think of the Mercedes SL.

Why then, are "sports cars" heavier, floppier, softer, etc. than their "grand touring" counterparts. You keep going back to this oversimplified chair/sofa argument but you have failed to justify the logic in it in the first place. Since when have you been one to mindlessly adopt old conventional ideas?!

It makes about as much sense as calling Native Americans Indians. Indians live in India!

Get with it Raza. Hell, SCCA doesn't even let you race a Miata without a hardtop.

Convertibles are for a mid-life crisis.
Coupes are for the track.

To say that the softer, usually more touring minded open top version of a car is somehow "sportier" than the coupe is pointless and illogical.

Simple:

2 seat, 2 door, rear drive, manual transmission, open top.? Corvette is a sports car.? Z06 is not.?
I said "NOT the traditional definition".  We will be using the definition the vast majority of the planet uses:  2 seat car designed for spirited driving.

SVT666

There.  Check the list out now Raza.  I hope that satisfies you.

Can you name 5 trackday cars that are closed roof?

I still don't get why you get so angry about this.  From now on, I'll refer to all cars as either sports cars (Damn, that Odyssey is one fast sports car!) or supercars (I personally think there are better supercars than the Ford Explorer) if it makes you happy.

You're getting awfully irrational about it too.  Everyone likes to use extremes in this argument.  My argument is simple:  A hardtop version of a convertble is just as much a sports car or more then the vert.  Case in point: Corvette coupe vs. Corvette vert.  Having said that, we've beaten this argument to death in other threads, so let's not fuck this one up too.

Come on guys, start nominating cars for each category or I'll pick my own, and I will have the Mustang in every single category.

Raza

Mustang is definitely not a minivan.

ANYONE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT STATEMENT?

I am sure that someone can come up with some stupid irrational argument to say that you can classify a mustang as a minivan

I'm surprised you haven't come up with one yet   ;)

Our race team races:

'81 Mazda RX-7
'91 Honda CRX Si
'80 Volkswagen Rabbit

There's three for you that we drive. I also see a lot of 911s, 240Zs, 914s, 944s, 510s, etc. What are you trying to prove?

You are saying that the rest of us use an arbitrary definition of a sports car, but what makes yours so damn official?

Even the FIA doesn't define sports car as open top.

People race anything.  People race trucks.  That doesn't make them sports car or trackday cars.

I'm talking about out of the box trackday cars.

And mine is official because it's the oldest and the original.  If you start calling motorcycles minivans, then I'm going to say that that's incorrect.
