There are cars that come out of the factory that look ricier than some of Wimmer's entries....

O God look at that awful big mouth bumper!!! :wtf:

Hood scoop? What is this a submarine??? :wtf:

Well at least you can turn this rice off!!! :wtf:

A lip kit and some aftermarket wheels can turn something mundane into something individual and exciting. I think Wimmer puts too much stock in the manufacturer's visions of cars. Nothing wrong with some understated customization. My only gripes are when shit is poorly done (the Civic Madman posted for example), or when cosmetic modifications are extreme well beyond the capabilities of the vehicle (i.e. a big bookshelf wing on a 100HP economy car). But for example that silver Opel wagon looks great to me.

cawimmer430

Like I said, the stringent T?V inspections we have here (all in the interest of safety and environment by the way) prevent people from ricing out their cars in the extreme here.

You have your rice, we have ours. And ours sucks compared to yours.

Going to have to disagree with you. A lip kit and aftermarket wheels don't make something mundane into something exciting: they make something mundane into something mundane with some cheesy stuff tacked on.

And i'm going to disagree with you, in return. Personalization is not bad in and of itself. it CAN be, but the act of doing it is not. Just like you can have a girl with nice makeup and jewelry, and one with too much makeup and jewelry, and a good makeover can do wonders (see fashion photography). Cars are no different, A lot of them are ok, but plain, and can be really spiced up and made much nicer with well selcted aftermarket bodywork/paint/wheels/accessories. And most of what Wimmer posts are mild, well done mods. And I don't believe his claims of "they don't allow much real rice here" as I've seen some insane customs out of Germany. CArs like that Opel wagon are mild, well done personalizations.

Even if they're well done, they're still ugly and don't add anything to the car.

Wasn't that a dealer installed option?  I wouldn't call that stock then.  Dealers add stupid shit all the time.

I don't think it was, and even so, if it were, it was a Toyota-issue bodykit.

Rupert

I don't really like the vast majority of body kit stuff, but it's not rice if it's not terrible, in the absolute sense. Not the relative-to-Germany/Wimmer sense.

It was a TRD kit. So dealer installed, but not dealer-sourced.

I'm pretty sure it was an Offical Toyota dealer installed kit.

The BMW doesn't look like rice and the opel(?) just has a paint job on it.

That benz was certainly riced out, these? not so much.

ChrisV

The BMW and Opel last posted are definitely not rice. Sorry, Wimms. Modified does not always equal rice.

Rice:

Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

NomisR

Rice = Gaudy wanna be looks over function.  If you have a fake hood scoop, or a huge spoiler on the back with a FWD car, that's rice.

Just modified where it improves the function of the car or simply look better without the fake fuctional looking stuff is not.

Like the fake BMW/Lancer ChrisV posted would be rice because it's a fake.

But then again.. would you guys considered a really well done Fiero into whatever MR car kit to be rice?

2o6

That 3-series is a little ricey with the altezzas, but the Omega just has an ugly paintjob.

If it's a fake, it's rice. Especially since it'll still only be as fast as a Fiero.

And I don't believe his claims of "they don't allow much real rice here" as I've seen some insane customs out of Germany.

Any modifications to a vehicle need to be cleared by the inspectors. However for many aftermarket parts the manufacturer simply gets a type approval, either a general one, or specific to cars.

It was interesting; the Fifa World Cup in Germany 2006, really kicked off a wave of flag waveing that the country had not seen since, well, the Third Reich. Many vehicles looked like this:

Technically the flags are also a violation, since there were no tests conducted that they won't fly off and hit someone in the face. Indeed some police officers did start handing out tickets. The top brass of the state police departments then issued directions to their officers to stop ruining sport  spirit.

This guy...

... might be pushing his luck however.

Of course you also had scenes like this:

Horrible violations of safety regulations!  :nono:  :mask:

Which the police turned a blind eye to.

Not wearing your seatbelt, using the mobile phone while driving....

And what about those people?

...and another ticket for asking unpatriotic questions.
