Uh, you're contemplating cars as old as 20 years?

Civic it, and be done with it. Your psyche needs the rest I think.

The Civic isn't any cheaper to start with than the Focus, and it's not much cheaper than a Mustang. It also holds its value better than either of them, which means he'll have to settle for an OLDER Civic compared to his other choices.

Quite frankly, I think Civics make up some of the worst used-car deals. They're just too damn expensive.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Leak down test won't spot a bad bearing (which has stung you twice in the last month or so).

No, but a leak down test will tell me if it's going to need a rebuild or if it's a modifiable car.

Which is why they're a great car to buy new. I have a feeling flipping this car isn't a priority for Hemi.

It's not.  If I get a Mustang I'm keeping it so that it can eventually be passed down to one of my kids.  If I buy a Focus, Civic, etc. the car will be driven until it dies.  I drove the Sunfire until it died twice.

Go older, save money, and mod more.

I don't think that's how it works.

My Z is just now getting to be reliable. When you buy an old car, you get old ball joints, old trans, old water pump, old seals, old brake calipers, old shocks, etc. You can't replace all of them all at once (although sometimes it feels like you have to). And the replacement parts you get often don't last as long as the OEM stuff.

Why do you think I got a 2002 Ford Focus? I didn't want the headaches of all those old parts on a daily driver.

Very true.  I will most likely end up with a Mustang in the 1996 to 2000 range depending on the mileage and purchase price.  I like the looks of this one:

1997 Mustang GT

The mileage is a little high, but as long as it passes a leak down test it's a good car to go with.
I've always wondered why it's called "mileage" if you're talking about kilometers.

Did you read the rest of my post?

I clearly stated that money would have to be spent to bring it up to solid condition(things like ball joints, tie rods, etc). I believe that you would have to replace these things in either an 91 mustang or a 97 mustang. Anything over 10 years normally needs these things, unless it is a highly pampered low mileage car which i think is unlikely in the case of a 10 year old mustang(people bought them and drove them daily).

JYODER240

You haven't really driven many "sporty" cars outside of Mustangs. I'd atleast go test drive something different.

After you wake up with the sun at 6am on someone's floor, coughing up cigarette butts and tasting like warm beer, you may well change your opinion on this matter.

There's not much else in the price range that speaks to me, so why would I?  Give me some cars in the Mustang's price range you think I should be interested in.

I shouldn't even dignify this one with a response.

Besides I can only get fairly high mileage cars or more then 12 years old for $10K.

If you don't want a Camaro, then you will be stuck with something boring. :evildude:
$10k? A brand spankin' new Hyundai Accent hatch, no options. If the engine blows up, it has a 10-year warranty or something like that.

A Camaro is too much car for him. He can only handle Ford's wimply little OHC V8 motors.

Believe me I prefer the power of the Camaro and the Camaro is actually easier and cheaper to modify, but I prefer the Mustang's styling and interior packaging.  The Mustang may not be as fast, but it's most certainly the better car.

Believe what you will, but as someone who has owned a 1996 Mustang GT (400+ hp NA) and has a brother-in-law with a 1997 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 (400+ hp NA) and a 1997 Camaro SS (600+ hp NA), the Mustang is definitely the better car.  It's more comfortable, more reliable, has a usable trunk, is easier to get in and out of, has better outward visibility, and well...just plain looks better too.  Both my brother-in-laws cars are stupid fast, but they are also uncomfortable and they have that stupid catalytic converter hump in the floor.

280Z Turbo

Since both interiors suck, I'd go with the one with the awesome motor.

Muscle cars aren't supposed to be comfortable, reliable, or practical...
but we all know you love Mustangs, so stop trying to rationalize it and just get one already.
