Yes, on the Fords they did.

On the pre-'79 wagons it made a bit more sense, as they were over a foot longer and there was room for four (children) back there. When they got downsized into the Panther platform, it really became strictly a two seat arrangement (although I've had as many as five back there for parking lot cruises and such)

I rode in the back of one of those for years. And we pulled a big overweight camp trailer too.

Ours wasn't as fancy, no wood trim. And when we "upgraded" to a Taurus wagon it was amazing how much space we lost. Dad bought a little cargo trailer.

The no-wood ones go for a premium now, and I've been told that in the later years most of them were special orders from coroners and funeral homes.
