I thought your parents sold you your car?

Yes, they bought it, and now I'm leasing it from them.

Intense. So you have to give it back at the end of a certain number of months, and pay them if you want to buy it?

No, I work for my pops, and instead of getting a paycheck, it goes towards the car.  I'll own it, eventually.

Commercial Real Estate.  Tough Stuff.

Tough stuff, but I'm sure it reels in the cash.

Huh.  Most of what I hear points to the opposite being true.

Most of what I hear on the E38 forums points to the V12 being slightly more reliable than the V8, but that reliability is mostly in the cooling system.

Tune-ups? All that really requires is a plug change and you can do that yourself. And from what I've seen on the E38 forums, BMWNA techs are not the best source of information, as they tend to f**k these cars up on a regular basis. Almost NO one is happy with their dealer service, both in cost and in accuracy of the repairs. E38 owners would rather DIY or find a good indy shop (of which there are many) when their cars need work.

I'd love a 750, and almost bought one, but for the good deal I got on the 740...
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

hmm, check this out.

Seems like a good price, maybe worth the drive.

I'd rather have a bmw but i like the style of these.

You could pick up a later model with the Supercharged V8 for not much more.

Well now I have a beater.

What's wrong with it?

nothing major, buy you don't have any more room for cars.

I'll probobly finish driving it through the winter.

Next summer i will sell it and probobly my 84 Z and maybe the 240 as well.

I need to get rid of some cars(so i can get more ).

If i get rid of 3 and buy 1 it will still be an improvement.

I'm pretty hot on the 750, the only other thing that could sway me would be a S8 but i'm trying not to spend that much.

MrH

I have to say, I'd be leaning much more towards an S8, or even just an A8.

While the 7-series is an awesome car, if this is primarly your winter ride, you might as well get AWD if you can.  That, and the A8 is gorgeous.

Damn, I'd take a used '99 Escort and use the rest of the money on winter trips to Cancun

But whatever floats your boat  :ohyeah:

Well, I am speaking from my experience of working in a dealership, in the service department.  While not a tech myself, I had plenty of contact with them, the SAs, and the shop foreman.  The shop itself was the number 1 rated service department in the country (as rated by the customers) and we had service departments from around the world come and train with us.

The v12s we had come into the shop often had much less mileage than the V8s so it becomes kind of hard to distinguish which was truly more reliable.  The two models had about the same number of problems (cooling problems were issues for almost all BMWs in Texas) that I can remember, except, on average, the v12s had usually covered much less distance in doing so.  Maybe the assumed storage that the v12 cars were undergoing (compared to the V8s which were running) led to them having a similar absolute number of problems.  Let it be known that these are just my observations, but I figured they might be of help to you.

I can tell you for sure one thing, the parts are going to be more expensive on the V12 and if the air suspension is included in the package (which, IIRC, it is), it is known to fail @ ~150K or so.  Add to that the very small difference in seat of the butt performance between the v12 and the sport package equipped v8, I say go for the v8.
Difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week.

FlatBlackCaddy

Thanks for the info longhorn.

Cost isn't that important, when things break they always cost money. I do realize that any vehicle i own will have low costs simply because i do all the labor so i can afford to absord the cost of expensive parts since there is no labor involved. I'll certainly look into the 7s more before i make any decisions.

FlatBlackCaddy

So i've updated the list.

At this point i've got for solid choices, all seem to sit around 12-16K used with modest miles(80-100).

In no order.

Audi S8

What about an A6 4.2? Or, if you're willing to stretch, a S6 (Avant only though, don't know if that is a problem).

FlatBlackCaddy

S6 has the same v8 as the S8 correct?

I want a full size car if possible.

The only A6 varient that interst me is the RS6 but those are still pulling in 50K used.

Honestly, it pains me to say this, but if I was shopping this segment I would probably go for a LS400. The face lifted version just looks so clean in black with 18"s.

I would try to get a 2001 or so (early model) LS430 in black.

Oh yes. I love the S6 Avant. I tried to convince my parents to get one when they got the Allroad. Hell, I tried to convince them to get a used one this past summer to replace the Allroad.
