What year?

No idea, but it was the current model year. I had to drive from Baltimore to Philadelphia in the rain, and it just handled so poorly. When I got to Philly, they said I could keep the Solara but I told them no way and that I wanted something else.  That was how I got the Sonata actually.

All luxury cars drop like a rock. Sadly this is an even better reason to buy the hyundai. If you want luxury and not a badge you would be better off buying a 35K Hyundai that will be worth 15K in 5 years compared to a 60K BMW that will be worth 20K in 5 years.

Or, better yet, just buy that 20K five-year-old BMW (and, for peace of mind, an extended warranty).  You will have a real luxury car and save a bundle, too.  $30K for a Hyundai is insane.  I don't care how good it supposedly is, it's still a Hyundai.  (and I've NEVER seen a good Hyundai, BTW).

Cheers,

I really like it.  Especially for the price.  I've rented a Hyundai Sonata a couple times, and although extremely boring, it was a very nice car.

I think it's good for what it is: a cushy Toyota. The interior looks like a $50K ride, not $20-30K.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

This car looks like an Infiniti. Still, I like it other than the grille.

The Solara's interior?!

Hyundai is getting serious about their engines.  In particular, 268 hp out of the 3.3L V6 is impressive.  Honda, Toyota, and Nissan all need 3.5 liters to get that output.

SVT_Power

I believe this thing's on sale already in Korea. Dealers started taking orders on the 3rd IIRC.

I'd probably pay $30k for this over the other two similarly priced cars mentioned in the press release

Of the other cars that look like a BMW 5er, this looks better than the Accord.

The Solara's interior?!

Yes. That picture isn't particularly flattering (the white interior looks better, IMO), but the materials are nice. I rode in a Solara convertible a few years ago and the quality of the interior shocked me. It's obviously where the engineers/designers spent most of their time. Buying a Solara, you don't pay for the engine, or the chassis, you pay for a comfortable cabin.

So here's the question:  Given you're standing in an empty parking lot with a Chrysler 300C, Genesis V8, and a G8 GT, which one do you pick?

Trep's answer:  The Avalon sitting in the next lot over.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

Wouldn't it depend on how the cars drive? A complete unknown for at least one of the three?

CJ

Not for me.  I'm basing my opinion on interiors.  I'd take the car with the best interior, which just happens to have the most power.

Spoken like a passenger. It could have a crap ride that would make it horrible to drive, and that wouldn't show up on the spec sheets or the press photos.

But I have no reason to think that this won't be a competent effort. It reminds me of the Lincoln LS V8.

People used to say that about Japanese cars, too. Now look at Lexus.

Maybe Hyundai should ahve made a Luxury brand, like Toyota did, just to make closed minded people STFU.

BTW, my Accent was a good economy car, and I didn't mind the Rental Sonata I took to CT to pick my BMW up with. Even though I'm loath to judge anything by a rental, otherwise i could ahve assumed what my SVT Contour was like by renting a fucking base Contour 4 cyl. Yeah, this car looks like it will be IDENTICAL to a rental Sonata.  :banghead:

Hyundai has never, ever done a good fun car. Ever.

I am not judging them based on some personal bias, its based on their history.

I am also not saying it can't possibly be a good car. I am saying that I will assume it is like their other cars until proven different. Just because they compare it to the E-class or GS doesn't mean squat to me considering they have also compared the Sonata V6 to the BMW 5-series in their commercials.

I just think its weird people think a car caompany with no history in this product will automatically set the new standard...especially considering they have never set any standard in any class ever before.

If this car drives as good as the G8 (which I do assume will drive very well, based on numerous reviews of the Holden/Vauxhall versions and my own drive in a GTO) it will deserve credit. But so far its completely untested.

ifcar

Saying they benchmarked the GS in the engineering process is very different from ads that say a Sonata is quicker than a 525i.

Its not that much different. Who knows specifically what they benchmarked. Quietness? Steering feel? Suspension?

The point is with the 5er they took its weakest point and compared it to the strongest point of their car. Nice advertising I guess, but in the end you are left with a shitty car and I nice engine.

Maybe the Genesis will be different, but I'd rather wait and see instead of just taking their word for it.

ifcar

Advertising is irrelevant to benchmarking, whether they actually benchmarked what they claimed to or not.

Hyundai has never, ever done a good fun car. Ever.

None of the top selling cars are really "fun" cars, either, Mazda's 6 is a fun sedan in some forms, but it can't sell anywhere near the Accord/Camry. So Hyunsdai, wisely, aimed for compentent value, which is exactly where this luxury car is, just like the first LS400 from Lexus. Look how it did compared to the more "fun" Q45 on introduction...

Youre not supposed to judge the Genesis on "fun" but on how well it's value is in comparison to the cars it is competing against.

QuoteI am not judging them based on some personal bias, its based on their history.

And again, that's what people said about the Japanese. Hell, even about VW.

QuoteI am also not saying it can't possibly be a good car. I am saying that I will assume it is like their other cars until proven different.

Their other cars are good values in their classes, with a good aray of standard features and competence for the money. I saw nothing wrong with the 06 Sonata I rented, and the Accent GS I owned wasn't a bad little car at all.

You win the intarweb debate.

But back in reality, Hyundai is claiming they will be selling an E-class competitor for 30k. Back in reality, I expect they will be selling a Dodge Charger with lots of fake wood. Hyundai makes okay cars for the price, but as far as actual product they are average at best, and crappy IMHO.

Quote

They are selling it as a sport sedan, not me. If they simply introduced it as a RWD car with a V8, comfy suspension, and lots of features for the price I would belive it completely. However, they are claiming it to be an E-class at mainstream prices. It could be true, but I am going to wait until they prove it.

Quote
And again, that's what people said about the Japanese. Hell, even about VW.

And back then, they had to prove themselves. The weird thing for me is that people are just assuming that Hyundai will now have one of the best RWD sport sedans on the market...because they said so.

You can say they are "good for the price" but I always chuckle when I hear reviewer say how good they are. They really are cheaply made cars that try to look like the nicer cars and sell to people who won't notice the difference.

Vague insinuations and pictures of rally cars aside, my brother has a Tiburon. Its crap.

If you think Hyundai is setting the standard...in any class of car...good luck with that.

It's not about what I think, or the fact that everyone else in the world has acknowledged Hyundai's success.  It's about how much you hate the world, and how want to blame Hyundai for all your problems in life.

Do you think some of that success had to do with their marketing campaign?  Marketing the Genesis as a luxury saloon would be tough because it's a Hyundai, at least lexus was a separate brand.
