So?

So you don't compare a sedan with a hatch. You compare the sedan with the sedan.

There were no numbers for the sedan.

The Taurus isn't a bad car, but not a GREAT car, which ford really needs.

Actually, the Taurus is a VERY good car.  Unfortunately the sheetmetal is more bland then anything else on the road.  The bland sheetmetal and poor marketing are to blame.  Nothing else.  THe car itself is more then adequate to be a strong seller.

I think the Taurus (and moreso the 500) has a certain understated elegance.  No, it's not flashy, but it's generally pretty well proportioned and I don't think it'll look dated in a couple of years like a number of other designs on the market.

Yeah the Mazda 6 with the body kit looks really old.... without it, it looks ok.

I like the Taurus. (MT-5, Please)

a few questions: what will happen to the current vehicle's triplet, the '09 lincoln mks? will this model be short-lived or will the next taurus be a cheap version of the upcoming mks? gee, there will or will not be a new sable/sable replacement? will mercury die with the end of sable, if it's not renewed? will fmc market the next generation taurus/sable as the replacement for the dead (fleet only for 2008) crown vic and dying grand marquis... AND/OR be coined the "taurus/sable" successors? one more question: where's the v8? not??? damn :( !

FoMoJo

The Taurus/Sable only makes sense as a replacement for the Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis otherwise, there's no comfortable segment for them.  As they are based on the premium Volvo platforms, it makes sense to upscale them and position them as affordable fullsize, entry luxo with the Sable, and with a nod to Economy and Ecology (EcoBoost).

I wonder why boring and bland works so well for Camrys but not Tauruses? (Tauri?)

The Camry is much cheaper, for one thing. It also has a large and loyal customer base, while Ford alienated and reduced the size of the Taurus fan club by phasing it out and then reintroducing it at a much higher price.

I believe you can get a Taurus for less than a V6 Camry, but I they probably should've kept the 3.0 Duratec as the base engine (and the 3.5 as the optional engine) to keep the price down. I bet a lot of people would buy a smaller-engine Taurus if it started at less than $20k.

I agree. A 3.0 Duratec or even a 4-cylinder would be decent. How slow would the 2.3 from the Fusion be?

I doubt most Camry sales are V6s though. I know they had stats for the last generation that 75% or so of sales were LE 4-cylinder models, which are much cheaper than any current Taurus.

I've seen the same type of statistic but I thought it was around 80+%.

The Taurus is a full sized sedan, comparable to an Avalon in size and bulk.  The 2.3L would be grossly overwhelmed.
