I'll see if I can find out more about the B3 Passat springs. Supposedly, they will lift the rear of a MK2 Jetta 4", but I don't know how different my Mk3 is.

Dude, 4" is a lot.  That could screw up a lot of stuff with tire wear/suspension geometry, etc.

I figure if I got those I'd just cut a coil off, since the rear springs have a large number of coils close together.
The fronts, on the other hand, have just a few coils with fairly wide spacing. My options are a VR6 spring, which is just slightly stiffer, maybe worth 0.5", and/or a rubber ring on the bottom, and/or some of these other spacer things

How much is the max you can lift an economy car without messing everything up?

If I had a MK4, I could actually buy a 2" lift kit for it. http://www.metalnerd.com/cat09.htm

but srsly, the rear is just a solid axle, so it could probably take a lot of lift, but the front struts are CRAP

The rear is a torsion bar, not a solid axle.

It's a piece of shit.

Anyhoo, I just rode back from Advance Auto with 8 rubber blocks in my pants. They might be too small to lift the front very much, but the store had a larger size if I need them.

Pics of the jet with my Cu5+0M STAGE 1 LIFT installed :tounge:
That's three of the rubber boosters on each front spring, and one ring on each rear spring.
Ya, it doesn't look too lifted in the rear, but it's probably got an inch in front. The best thing is that driving over rocks doesn't cause it to bottom out. On the road it's slightly more firm, but otherwise fine. I'll see how this does for now, but I might go for STAGE 2! That'll be bigger boosters on the front, and boosters on the rear instead of the rings.

z0mg, KILLER BEES! I ran over a bunch of them. They were swarming all over the road.      :pullover: :mask:

No.

A lot of trucks have solid axles front and rear, which is unaffected by such things.

I think double A-arm setups are more tolerant of raising than MacPherson struts.

MacPherson setups need a lot of negative camber to handle well. If Nick takes turns too fast, the outer edge of his tires will get worn away real fast.

My Z has negative camber but it still eats the front tires up at the racetrack.

struts gain camber under compression, and i just did the opposite of that. anyway, it's a very small amount.

You need moar negative camber. Positive camber FTL.

I'll crash into a tree and die because I have rubber blocks jacking my car up and limited the suspension travel. My tires will wear out 10,000 miles sooner because of the alignment.

Not only did I use anodized billet aluminium AN fittings and stainless steel hose all around, but they are done in a two-tone hot pink/neon puple scheme, and spiral wrapped with flashing rainbow rope lights.
