My dream budget rally car...

I almost bought one of these a VERY long time ago.  A silver 1987 16 valve model.  The Volkswagen dealer was a complete dickhead who kept trying to push me into buying a Fox instead.  I walked out and bought a Merkur XR4Ti across town!

My mom almost bought one in the early 80's, but got a better deal on a 280ZX instead

Yawn

And the Corrado was expensive.. My friend had a VR6 and was intrigued about the rear wing going up after a certain speed..

Merkurs were interesting, little cars.  My brother had one.

They couldn't have called it a Ford Sierra Turbo here.

First of all, it was very comparable to a BMW 3 Series back in the day, if not actually a better car, so they priced it alongside the BMW.  No one would buy a car the size of an Escort with the Ford badge on it for that much.  Second, GM has owned the rights to the name Sierra for the last 30 years in North America.

Well, what was the ORIGINAL Scirocco's market compared to the Golf and GTi back in the day? I don't se a difference OR a problem. Both had the same chassis and engines, but the Scirocco appealed to those that wanted something sportier looking than an econobox.

They should have used their resources on ,for example, a new Sharan, which should have been on the market yesterday. I'll maintain that the majority of Scirocco buyers would buy a GTI. Would be Sharan buyers are at Ford, Fiat or PSA.

Unless its a truck or SUV.  Then you slap a $40k sticker on it and no one will blink.

Frankly I can't see the logic of producing a slightly squishier version of the GTI when the original version is so good.  To me this looks like VW really, really, really wanted to have its very own cloned version of the Brera to sell in Europe.

I agree.  But then people are tending to go with smaller MPVs.  I hardly see any Galaxies or Espaces compared to Scenics and Zafiras.  And I think the Touran has done well for VW.  Perhaps they're not bothered about investing in a Sharan replacement.

I read somewhere that it was almost sold here as an Infiniti.  That would have been a trip.

BTW- does any one know the correct way to pronounce Scirocco?  I always thought it was pronounced like "see-ROCK-oh," but a friend of mine insisted it was "SKI-rock-oh," and on Family Guy they pronounced it "she-ROCK-oh".  These sort of things keep me up at night.

The original Italian is she-ROH-co, I think. Either way, if the 'sc' at the start is not pronounced 'sh' you're doing it entirely wrong.
