He had to consult the owner's manual to figure out how to put a 2003 Jetta into reverse.  :lol:

Quite a few low budget cars lack a tach even with a manual gearbox.  I've seen base Ford Foci from a few years back (before the 1st facelift) with manuals and no tachs.

If you need a tach in order for you to be able to drive stick properly, you're all n00bs.

Once you get to know your car, you shouldn't really need it.....

No it shouldn't. The first vehicles I ever drove stick on did not have tachs. The first stick car I drove with a tach was a 2003 Chevy Optra, coming from a 2002 Maruti Zen.

Hell, I didn't even notice that this Civic didn't have a tach until I was watching my buddy learn from the passenger seat.

Suprisingly, Trep is right. Beginners should not be staring at the tach, they should be feeling it.

It's nice to know where the redline is when you're romping on it.  Of course, I guess that's the benefit of a rev limiter.  Bounce off the limiter a few times and you'll figure out how to identify the end of the rev range by ear.  And if the power falls off some distance before max revs, you can simply shift by the seat of your pants.

You don't absolutely need it, but it's still nice to have and I don't see why they wouldn't put one in.

It was a DX with no power windows. My girlfriend's Civic LX didn't even have it, so I think only the EX and Sport models had it.

I don't know about the current gen, but 7th gen and older DX models did not have a tach.  All trims above DX did have a tach.

Nope.  The drivers ed. Civics didn't have tachs, though they were automatics.

No. My girlfriend's 2002 LX didn't have a tach.

This friend of mine has a 2000 or 2001 LX automatic sedan and it doesn't have one either.

I'm still amused by how confident you are in your abilities considering I'm not even convinced you can get a car out of a parking lot if it has three pedals.

I was speaking of the US market cars.  It's my understanding that Canadian market trim levels are different from US trim levels, with the Canadian Si being equivalent to the EX in the US, and the US Si being the same as the SiR in Canada.  DX is obviously the bottom of the line for both markets.  I'm not sure where the Canadian LX and EX models slot in relative to the US LX.

Yeah, I learned to drive 5 speed when I was 15 (jeez, it's been 10 years :mask:), and I've driven one daily for the past 5 years.  I'd put myself in the moderately proficient category.
