Is every Nissan dealer going to be able to service this car?

FlatBlackCaddy

According to nissan a dealership must have a technician and sales manager specially trained to handle the GT-R customers.

Also there is special tools and equipment involved.

I thought the number would be limited but i looked on nissan's website and in our area it looks like just about all the nissan dealers are listed as GT-R dealers.

well i thought maybe you won the 5 million or whatever the "cheap" jackpot is.

Damn, that car is FAST  :heated:!  5+ seconds a lap is seriously fast, especially considering the competition.

But, it would be my absolute last choice from my position (having never driven any of them) as the lack of manual transmission and uninspiring styling would never leave me fully satisfied.
Difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week.

That would be a major concern to me, given the small size of the production run I doubt many nissan dealerships would have a tech who's experienced working on them.

Then again, why would you train 20,000 techs to work on maybe 1500 cars?

I'd be much happier having a specialist take care of my ultra-complex supercar than the same guy doing 30,000 mile check-ups and replacing windshield washer pumps on Sentras.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

That is assuming you live in an area where they have one of these "specialists"...

No, my happiness factor would remain the same, I just might be slightly more inconvenienced

There is now a monster thread at Road and Track's forum about this article, with various Chevy guys complaining that Steve Millen (a former Nissan racer and owner of Stillen) was sandbagging in the Z06, or that the GT-R's tires gave it an unfair advantage, or other such nonsense.  Several R&T editors have commented in the thread.  It's interesting to read if you have time:

It's almost frightening how well this car performs and how it...outclasses way more expensive competitors, whose builders have many years of sportscar-experience ahead.

Actually, I'll amend that. Any new car. I've been kinda shopping for a Mopar E-body ('70-'72 'Cuda or Challenger) as a hobby. There are a lot of "tribute" (read: clones) AARs and Hemis that could be had for the price of a GT-R, or maybe a little less.

One of my friend's dad's has an orginal AAR 'Cuda. It was featured on Speed Channel's coverage of the Year One Experience a few years ago.

This thing just handed the competition its ass and then jerked the plate away and dumped the contents on the floor and continued to laugh as it stole their girlfriends and drove off.

Nissan has been in the game for a while, I think 2007 was the Z's 30th Anniversary

And it's not like the concept of the GT-R is new; the R32 that came out in 89 was equally devastating.

I'm def. impressed by its performance and value but I just can't get past the look or size of the car.

Not to be nitpicky, but the Z came out in 1970, I think.

Not sure if one can say Nissan has been in the game, because of the Z. It's beeing compared with cars like the Audi TT here that are even said to handle better (might have been different with the old ones though).

And the old Skyline GTR... As a tuner car or special Nismo version it might have been a great performer. But I think it had only 280 horses, right? Not sure though.

I must say the old Nissan 200SX is one of my affordable dream cars though... I once had a ride in it with a guy from the Nissan workshop where I worked for 3 weeks and he kicked it with 130km/h through the city. That was a BLAST!!!!

Those 280 horses were "280 horses". It was said to make 276 because of a Japanese gentleman's agreement.

this is a little history tidbit from a motor trend article from awhile ago. I have the magazine and was going to scan it but found it online.

The GT-R is a good performance car PERIOD.

It doesn't require some wicked tune or special edition to give it the performance needed to compete with it's competition(and higher).

Since the into of the R32 it has been a performance powerhouse for a very small entry price.

FlatBlackCaddy

Here's the interesting parts pertaining to the R32 and newer cars.

"In the late 1980s, as Japan's automakers reveled in unprecedented wealth and power, Nissan brought back the fabled GT-R badge with a truly astonishing car. Codenamed R32, the 1989 Nissan Skyline GT-R featured computer-controlled all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. Under the hood was a 2.6-liter straight-six with twin ceramic turbochargers that developed 280 horsepower. It was like a Porsche 959 for the masses."

"The Japanese media called the car Obakemono-monster. At Wheels magazine in Australia, where I was working at the time, (Australia was the only country outside Japan where the R32 was sold), we christened it Godzilla. In an era when a regular Corvette took 15 seconds for the quarter mile, this Nissan ran it in 13.5. Out on the open road, it destroyed Ferraris and 911s with its unbelievable traction and braking. It sliced 25 seconds off the eight-minute/45-second Nurburgring Nordschliefe lap record held at the time held by a Porsche 944."

I'll give you looks, but the GT-R isn't huge compared to the competition. Next to an old Skyline or a NSX it looks gigantic, but newer Porsches look enormous next to old Porsches, too.

The GT-R is virtually identical in size to a Mustang.

Another 2+2 with a V8, imagine that!

It's like Raza's arguments against BMW--yes, we all know the 3-series has gotten bigger, heavier, and more electronically controled............so have the A4 and the C-Class.

Raza

2007 911:
Length:  175.60
Width:  71.20
Height:  51.60

1988 911:
Length:  168.90
Width:  65.00
Height:  52.00

2008 GT-R:
Length:  183.27
Width:  74.61
Height:  53.94

So it's significantly longer and wider, but not too much taller.

Neither is the GT-R, and while it is longer than the 997, it also has a more useable rear seat.
