4cyl Camaro?

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/19/lutz-says-gm-considering-2-0-liter-turbo-for-camaro/

A four-banger in a Camaro! Blasphemy you say? Could be, but what four-pot are we talking about? In this case, the General's car czar Bob Lutz suggests that the new 2010 Camaro due next February could offer the same 2.0 liter direct-injected engine used in the Saturn Sky Redline, Pontiac Solstice GXP and the SS versions of the Chevy HHR and Cobalt. Before dismissing the turbo-four immediately, consider the top-of-the-line engine options the Camaro offered after the last oil-embargo-driven doomsday. In '72, the big block 402 engine offered just 240 horsepower; in '73, the Z28 was equipped with a 245-horse 350 and by '75 the hottest option underhood made only 155 horses. Ouch. The 2.0 being considered for the Camaro punches out 260 horsepower, and based on our time with the engine, you feel each of them as you run up towards the redline. The next step-up will likely be a version of GM's 3.6, as offered in the CTS and G8, also making around 260 horsepower.

Other Camaro tidbits mentioned by Lutz: it will be priced higher than the Mustang, as GM sees the Camaro as a higher-end offering. Specifically, Lutz suggests that the Camaro will feature a much better interior than the 'Stang, along with its inherently better independent rear-suspension arrangement.

Perhaps a bigger question to ponder is how bad will the performance industry be impacted by new fuel efficiency standards along with the ever-tightening emissions regulations. Just so long as carmakers such as GM continue to offer engine options like their 2.0 liter DI four-banger, the performance drop-off won't be nearly as drastic as it was back in the mid-70s. Thank God for that!

Wouldn't be the first time.  The base engine in the Camaro in the early 80s was the old 2.5L "Iron Duke" 4-cylinder engine.

Relative terms buddy, relative terms. It's going to be fuel efficient compared to the V8.

Initially, the sound of a 4cyl Camaro is a turn off but if it can output 260hp then awesome!

It's not THAT heavy. It'll be very fuel-efficent compared to the V6 and V8.

I suppose.
A turbo-4 sounds nice though.

My V6 is very fuel inefficient. I believe it's tank is somewhere around 17 gallons and it does about 290 miles to the tank.

If the G8 is any indication, it'll likely weigh in the ballpark of 3800 lbs.  I'd call that pretty darned heavy.

That's only 17 mpg.

I usually fill it up around 273 (don't ask why I recall that number) but it obviously still has a good gallon left in it which is where I got 290 from.

17mpg isn't that great for what is essentially a pathetic V6 although big at 3.4L's.

If the Camaro weighs 3800 lbs, it's going to be a flop - 4cyl or V8, it doesn't matter.

I agree.
I was just going off of the GTO and GT weight, as well as the upcoming Challenger.
That's why I'm assuming it's not a lightweight.

Ermmmm.....mine weighs 3400 lbs. So a 400 lb increase roughly 14 years later is entirely within what I would expect.

At least that's still 400lbs less than the Challlleennnger, but 3800 is still unacceptable for that type of car. SUV's, sure, they can gain all the weight they want, I don't give a shit. It's definitely not going to weigh less than mine. Not with all the new safety standards, airbags that protect your left nipple, and all that other new technology mumbo jumbo.

Can I opt to have that airbag removed?

No it comes standard, else they wouldn't be able to brag about how the car is super safe with its 100 airbag zones. 99 just doesn't sound the same, you know?

Didn't they have that general look of the car down pat like 5 years ago?

Muscle cars aren't really meant to be great handlers. The Camaro will do just fine in a straight line. As long as that it can hit 60 in less than 6 seconds then who cares how much it weighs? It will make me proud. :praise:

Weight has an inverse relationship to performance. Less weight will make it faster in a straight line.

Thanks for the news flash. Having a light weight muscle car is pointless. They need to be heavy and fast. Period.

The Camaro will r0x0rz your b0x0rz when it comes out. Just wait.

How much power can a tuned Ecotec make?

Hopefully, the Z28 still carries the LS2/3 V8, though.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

I think highly of the DI Ecotec, but there's no way it's going to move that heavy pile of steel with anything resembling haste.  If it's the alternative to the V8 then so be it; at least it'll be more exciting that the pushrod V6 selection, but I would never opt for it.
