Your parents drive expensive cars and I'd guess that insurance isn't high on their list of priorities.  We're a family on a budget and insurance is very high on our list of priorities.

WTF? I'm not even getting a car!!!! What the hell do my parents' cars have to do with anything? Forget considering insurance, they aren't even considering a car for me anytime soon!

EDIT: And just because they have nice cars, they can automatically don't have to spend carefully, and don't need a budget? That's pretty damn stupid, CJ.

Dude, you guys will get married and have kids and it won't be possible to have an impractical, fun car. Then you guys will regret not being able to have a fun car while you could.

Stop living for others (BS excuses about having to pick up relatives) and live for yourself now. You'll have plenty of time to live for others later, when you have a wife and kids.

Exactly, when I start driving, I'll likely be paying for everything (except maybe insurance) gas, matinence and the cost of the car. What kind of sense does that make for me to buy a "fun" car that gets piss poor MPG's and that's uber-expensive to insure? My parents don't make that much money.....how selfish of me to burden them by me having "fun".

It's called a budget.  You obviously have no idea what the means.  A Miata almost triples insurance rates.

You know what? I'm getting a little sick of a few things.
#1. You and CJ are not the only ones who want to save money! Not everyone is filthy rich, as you seem to suggest, and everyone has a budget. I don't think you comprehend that. From the way you talk, you make it sound as if everyone is swimming in money, and you two are somehow on welfare.

#2. You have time to be practical and get a boatlike car when you're 40. I can also say that you are being impractical, because for the 95% of time when you won't be carrying luggage or people or anything, you would be lugging unnecessary weight, and using extra gas for no reason. As Raza said, just because you would carry something once every 6 months or so, doesn't mean you need a boat.

This is all I know about this particular problem:

When you're young you're all about trying to act responsible and adult. You believe that you're no longer a child and have to put away childish things. You think the only way to be an adult is to mimic the actions of the adults around you.

Here's the thing: the only reason you think adults act that way is because they're doing it for you. They've been so busy providing and caring for you for the entire time that you've been able to understand anything that it's become part of their psyche. They may even think they want you to be like them.

People who live and act like this without ever examining the why of it all see behavior that provides direct personal enjoyment without any financial or educational value as selfish, or juvenile.

They couldn't be more wrong.

Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?
