They weren't supposed to, drama is much more interesting than being nice, so they purposely were like that.

Most of the family reality shows I've seen (Osbornes, Hogan Knows Best, Gene Simmons FV, Little People... etc.) have plenty of drama but they always come off looking sympathetic or funny. John Force acts like a degenerate asshole.
