Prices for them are ridiculous.  People here want $4000 for some of them with over 200k miles.

I would love to find him one, but it's a toughie.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

Get a 'st33m wagon. Dirt cheap, dead reliable, 49mpg highway, incredibly boring.

I have never failed at finding the right car for anyone in my family at the right time for the right price.  I'm not going to this time, either.

It may not have enough space.  We cruised lots, and something Camry-sized will fit the bill in a pinch.  He'd prefer something a little larger, though.

Truth be told, this car will basically be used to get his stuff to and from school in NY, serve as the beer-run car, and it will be driven fairly infrequently during the school year.  I am going to bet on about 4-5 roundtrips a year at 1,200 miles apiece and some other running, so figure 7000-8000 miles a year.

I've thought about doing that and looking at picking up an RS (because they're still cheaper) or something stick (because they're cheaper yet), but I can't.  I just can't do that to him or to my car.  He doesn't deserve to inherit my problems, and I like my car too much, to be honest.

Any used car he buys is going to have problems - but at least you know the problems your car has. You'd like an RS and a manual. Yes, you would.

This is the perfect time to give him your car so you know what might go wrong with it, and for you to get a manual transmission Scoob. Plus, your car will stay within the family, so you can drive it if you want.

As much as I'd like to, I have too much money sunk into it in the form of parts sitting in the garage.  I'm not in a position to get a new car, and if I were, I probably would find on old Civic or something at this point.  My car's practicality for me far outweighs my desire for an RS at the moment.  It just wouldn't make financial sense, especially given the current debt I have already.

At this point, if I were a buying man, I'd get an EK so I could get 50 mpg or so.  I'm not in a position to buy a new car at this point.

I want him to get something newer and better-suited for his needs than what I have.  Just because I want to hang on to my oldie, doesn't make the same car right for him.

My car would be ideal for him, though.  That's a given.  It's just too old for him, and my car suits my needs perfectly for the time being.

This one is really out of left field, but my brother essentially needs a reliable, fairly all-weather vehicle that can haul all of his crap (as I explained earlier).  Tonight, we were checking out some of the local shed lots (thanks, Madman) and we found a 1997ish Nissan Pathfinder that had a ton of rust, but by all indications, had its engine replaced sometime during its life (it had a tag under the hood -- it was unlocked).  It had 4WD and it was auto, and while I worry about gas consumption, it just may be a safe, reliable, and cheap enough pick.

The current frontrunner is a Taurus wagon I have to call about on Monday, but he very well may be the only person buying an SUV in a soon to be $5 a gallon market.  It helps that everyone is selling them, too.

He also said he wouldn't be opposed to a Cherokee, but we shall see.

They are pretty solid vehicles (My dad had a '98 SE 4WD 5-speed), but it has the VG33 (VQ didn't come til the facelift and was a 99.5 model year.  The VG has a timing belt, so that's a consideration, as it's not a terribly cheap job.  They like to eat sway bar links in the front, and it does affect the handling a lot.  Very nice vehicles otherwise.  They are slow and thirsty though.  He might get 20 mpg highway.

Had I had had more money at the time, I probably would have bought my dad's Pathfinder when he sold it.

I'd just rent something for the times he needs to move stuff around. Considering he's a student, he's going to be too drunk to drive most of the time anyway.

He needed a big, relatively efficient car.  That, and I think my brother is a hippie, so he was beaming when he found out the thing was an FFV car.  I think the car works for him, and that's all that matters.  If he's happy, I'm happy.

The only thing I'm pissed about is that it's a Vulcan car, but hey, that's life.  It should be reliable.

Congrats to your brother.

Clearly, the deciding factor was the incredible heritage of the Ford brand, and the exceptional prestige that that gives the Taurus.  After all, Ford created the Model-T AND the Le Mans winning GT40, so you know they didn't compromise when conceiving the Taurus.

It's been confirmed:  My brother bought the car and he drove about 500 miles on it today without a hitch.  It could use a fair amount of work, but it came in at a pretty good price, and it should last him until after he graduates and buys his Aztek (yes, he wants one, so fuck off!).   :ohyeah:
