"As weird as this may sound, it seems Porsche is working on a Porsche badged Volkswagen Golf for 2012. Now, we know that the Volkswagen Golf is a huge success, but a Porsche version of the car seems like a totally absurd idea; unless of course Porsche is postioning itself to become more mainstream and compete with BMW.

The picture below is on the cover of the new AutoBild magazine. The caption next to it read (in German) ?kompakte geheim-projekte bis 2012. der porsche-golf.? That translates to ?compact secret projects until 2012. the Porsche-Golf.?

Not quite sure how I feel about this.  Currently, I have the shivers, feel slightly nauseous, and have started scanning the news feeds for other portents of the apocalypse.

Golf based is very vague. The MK VI coming out in October will essentially be a heavily facelifted MK V. The MK VII will be on a new extremely flexibly plattform  which will cover a large varity of vehicles and could be used as a base for Porsche.
I can not see Porsche offering a 1er competitor.

The TT is Golf-based, so it's not too bad. But they shouldn't be going that far downmarket.

Looks like a Porsche Scirroco.  Unless it is way more luxurious and significantly more powerful, I doubt I'd even be interested.

Isn't 2012 the end of the Mayan calendar? Hmmm.
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

If it's not RWD, at least AWD you morons. Isn't VW already working on a new Scirocco or COrraddddo or something? This had better not be a Porsche rebadge of that.

FWD Porsche for $50k???

I'm guessing it would only be offered in AWD, but it's still a horrible idea.

I suppose if it were RWD, for about $35-40k, it'd be a really cool 1 series competitor, but I guess that's asking for too much.

That is an impossibly bad idea, and I want all the Porsche and VWAG execs who thought this up to be rounded up, tied up, staked down in the Nurburgring pit lane and run over by Touregs and Cayennes until they are smushed beyond recognition.

Just another way for Porsche to make more money. They can make excellent cars but they're not purists, they know how much cash their name can get.

What  I'm afraid of is,

This thing will be an R32, for much more money. Will it be competitive against the likes of,

On the lower level- the 335i, the G37, the A5?

On the higher levle- the M3, the S5, the C6?

What will be its direct competitors?

2012. . ."Let's just throw in the towel and start rebadging the entire VW Lineup!  That way we can compete in even more market segments, as well as save money on development costs!

"Big mistake!" says the people...

2015. . ."Let's take the Porsche/VW group into receivership!  Apparently, our strategy of slowly diluting the brand until our entire lineup is nothing but cynical exercises in badge-engineered base-model cars albeit sold at premium prices eventually failed us just as spectacularly as it did for Rootes, British Leyland, FIAT, and General Motors!

I don't remember there being much uproar about the Boxster; if anything, a lot of people were excited about it...

And I wasn't around for the debut of the 924 and 928, but for the 924, IIRC, it was originally developed as a VW model, and when they decided not to pursue development on the car anymore, people didn't like the idea of Porsche taking over the development of a VW car and selling it as one of its own.

As for the 928, I think the outcries were over Porsche's original idea of replacing the 911 with the 928, since at the time they thought that the 911 had reached the end of its development cycle.

You're both way off.

Porsche is flushed with funds.  That's how they were able to buy so much of Volkswagen.

But this car (if it's real), I believe, is a direct reaction to European legislation that could end up costing Porsche billions over time if they don't lower their overall emissions.

Emissions, emissions, emissions.

I like the air-cooled cars more too, but it's been 10 years since the last 993 had left the building, and the water-cooled cars have proven to be excellent, as well.
