BRISTOL, England ? Andy Green, the current owner of the World Land Speed Record, and Richard Noble, the previous record-holder, have announced their new Bloodhound Project that will eventually go after the 1,000-mph mark in a supersonic car. The current record stands at 763.053 mph.

The two are building the Bloodhound SSC, a combination of jet, rocket and piston-engine power that measures 42 feet and weighs more than 14,000 pounds. With Andy Green in the driver seat, the team is starting with an 800-mph bid in 2009, then moving on to a 900-mph run in 2010 and finally going for the 1,000-mph goal in 2011.

The car will accelerate from zero to 1,050 mph in just 40 seconds and will be more advanced than most current spacecraft. A Eurojet EJ200 fighter-jet engine will propel the car to 300 mph, where a purpose-built hybrid rocket will then kick in to boost the car to 1,000 mph. Although the location for the drive is not yet set in stone, Black Rock Desert, Nevada, is one of the venues under consideration.

"I've met graduate engineers who are adamant that our previous record was what inspired their career choice as youngsters: That sort of thing makes all the effort worthwhile. The Bloodhound SSC will be so much faster and, we hope, will fire up every school kid about the science and technology," said Andy Green.

Awesome; I saw this on autoblog yesterday and was going to post it here, too, but forgot.

1,000 mph is insane; I can't begin to fathom what it feels like to literally outrun a bullet in a land vehicle. With that said, I wonder how the Ring times will compare to the GT-R
