2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

About 25,000.

I've had the C6 almost 3 years now, if you can believe that (ordered it in Dec '05 and took delivery Feb '06).

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

The Proteg? has around 110K miles.  I'll check for an exact number next time I use the car.  I bought it with ~87K miles (as best I can remember) in August of 2007.  So I'm on course for around 21K miles per year.

Ron, do you write off your mileage/depreciation as a business expense for your Audi?  And how much loss did you take on that thing when you traded in the last one with such high mileage?

Yeah - the car is a full writeoff.  there's the interest on the loan, the depreciation, and all my gas and maintenance.  (Even though Audi pays for almost all maintenance).  And TBR is right - the A4 was a lease.  I pre-bought 50,000 miles and turned it in a month early with 46,000 miles.  No downside in that deal.

We're learning about this stuff in financial accounting right now.  How do you write it off?  Do you drive them to a certain point and just dump them or what?

I let my accountant handle the details, but what I know is that we buy the vehicles and finance them for 3 or 4 years.  The interest paid is a deductible business expense, and he depreciates it over 7 yrs.  The rest of the expenses - gas, tires, etc. just gets posted as a normal expense, just like my payroll or lumber purchases.  I don't really know much about the tail end of the equation, when I sell or trade the vehicle.  My interest in that type of minutia wanes greatly since my brain is pretty worked over just trying to keep track of the rest of the business.

S6 arrived brand new at the end of May 2008....... will pass 12,000 miles as i drive it home tonight.

Considering how much time it spends parked up at London Heathrow, that's quite some mileage accumulated!

Wow!  How do you manage to drive that much in England?  That country is just not that big, and I thought everyone in England lives/sleeps/works/vacations in the same village??  Are you making continuous skid pad like trips around your roundabouts??

You aren't going to have to replace the engine soon, are you?  I thought Japan was pretty hardcore about emissions and whatnot.

Uh, I don't think an engine with 85k km is gonna be emitting a whole lot more than a 25k km engine, at least not because of some kind of internal mileage-dependent problem...

Easy......... a round trip to London is 220 miles, and if I am in the UK, I might do it 2 or 3 times a week............ because distances are not so huge, we tend not to fly internally, as you would in the US, and as the public transport system is less than wonderful (!), the car is the most realistic option a lot of the time!

IIRC, it's a matter of newer cars being exempt from emissions inspections while cars a few years old have to pass them.  And I believe they are so strict that new cars barely pass.

JCIs are pretty expensive (about 2k every 2 years depending on the class of vehicle).

We call it JCI, but JCI is just the insurance, however the inspection is due when the insurance is up (the end of 2 years) so we just group them both together and call it JCI.  It's not that bad to buy a used car, it's just that the Japanese seem to really enjoy buying new cars.  They don't drive much at all here, so used cars have very low miles.

   1. Insurance
          * Liability Insurance: The minimum amount required by U.S. Military Law is ?30,000,000 for bodily injury and ?3,000,000 for property damage. Insurance may be purchased from an authorized Japanese agency.
          * Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI): It must be purchased by a company licensed in Japan. Japanese law requires vehicle owners to carry in their cars at all times a form certifying that the second type of policy has been purchased. A firm selling the policy issues the form. The Japanese government determines level of JCI coverage. Failure to maintain current Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI) for your POV will result in suspension or revocation of driving privileges for up to one year.
   2. Inspection
          * Owners will be required to get their vehicles a biennial safety inspection. The inspection is based upon Japanese safety standards. This is a requirement under Japanese law and is required for all A/E/Y plated vehicles. This requirement is for vehicle inspections to be accomplished every two years within 30 days of the JCI expiration date.
