Grand Cherokee is a good choice.  Go with the six cylinder.  The V8 will drink entire oilfields dry!  Also check out the Volvo XC90, my personal favourite family-friendly SUV (and my wife's dream car).

Too Expensive.

I've heard the Dakota and Grand Cherokee are high-matinence, rather unreliable vehicles. The Xterra is nice, but seems to be a bit small, especially If you've complained about the crap you've had to haul around  and the lack of space in your Freestyle. The Explorer seems to be a solid choice here.

:nutty:

The six drinks about as much as the eight, so if one were to get a Grand Cherokee the eight would be by far the best choice.

For what it's worth a guy at work bought an '04 Grand Cherokee Overland about a year ago, and he hasn't had any problems with it whatsoever.

Granted, he paid a lot more than $15,000 for it...

$14,900 USD = $17,500 CDN + Tax + Duty

The cheapest XC90 I can find in my part of the world is $21,000 and has 61,000 miles.

I do too.  My brother's girlfriend has a 2002 GC Laredo (4.0 I6), and it's a nice vehicle.  I love driving it, and if she sells it for a good price (she's been talking about it, she wants a more fuel efficient car), I'd buy it tomorrow.

Oh, I didn't know we were talking Kanuckistani dollars.

Hmmmm, let's see.......with 15,000 Canadian dollars you might just be able to afford this:

Ifcar, do you know if the problems trend towards the V6 or V8 Jeep models?

They both have many problems, but the V8 seems to be a bit worse than the V6.

It's easy to forget about that silly setup in old Grand Cherokees.

hotrodalex

If the Xterra fits the bill, go for it. Otherwise, get an Explorer.

While Grand Cherokees are cool, I think there are too many potential problems. (now an older Cherokee would be cool :ohyeah: )

There's shit-tons of examples, I just picked one of the top of my head. I think understanding and acknowledging the difference between a v-engine and a straight-engine is pretty huge. I mean, how badly would I be chastised if I started being willy-nilly about the differences between an I4 and a V4? If someone said  "I would get a Honda Accord with the V4," what would you do? What would any of us do?

Calmly, impolitely say "It's an I4, you moron."

Just count the number of sparkplugs.

The Mazda RX-7 is a 4 cylinder and the 2.5L Ford Ranger had a V8.

I am a huge fan of the redesigned Xterra.  The 1st gen was a steaming pile on wheels.

I am also a huge fan of the Grand Cherokee, though I didn't vote for that one.  It does have a better 4wd system by a long shot.

What was bad about the 1st gen Xterra?  I've thought about picking one up, it's one of the few late model SUVs that you can find (somewhat easily) with a manual transmission.

Same drivetrain that was in my dad's Pathfinder, which was great (low power, mediocre fuel economomy, and timing belt aside).

Difference is the current Accord isn't sold with a V4 while the current Grand Cherokee is sold with a V6. It's been a while since I've had the older GCs on my mind.

Hey Hemi,

Jeep Commanders are going for nothing around these parts a 2-3 yr old 6 cyl can be had for as little as $11K, I have seen the 4.7 go for$15K.

They have more room, more along the lines of an explorer, a third row, and better 4wd systems.

A month ago, I picked up a loaded Hemi Commander, I mean loaded with only 31K on the clock for $16,500. I have to say I absolutely love this vehicle, it is a great family vehicle with more capability than you will need, especially with the Quadra-Drive II.

There are great deals out there on these very good SUVs

Well, there was nothing specifically wrong with it, I just am not a fan of the flaccid chassis, the gutless drivetrain, and the low-quality build.

Actually, the very first one is ok.  After they went with the goggle-eyes I hated it.  The supercharged V6 was kinda neat but available only with the automatic.

Frankly, the new one is so much better in every way that it makes the first gen look like crap when it wasn't that bad I guess.

Cheapest one in my entire province is $15,800 and is nowhere near loaded.  The cheapest one with the options we're looking for is $20,800.

Yes.  We'll be looking to buy this in about a year or so, but you know me, I'm thinking about it all the time.
Fuel economy is terrible, when compared to the Explorer with the 4.0L V6.  The EPA rathings are fairly close, but real world numbers are much further apart.
Maybe it depends on what you're towing.  I was a bit surprised when he said that fuel cost wasn't much different between the Explorer and the Expedition but then he was, usually, towing a boat when he drove them.

Interesting.  I never thought about it, but that all makes sense.

Though, in reply to your statement on the SC version not having a stick, I have to say  :orly:

I'm sure it was rare, but they are out there.  Check the pics here - I see a supercharger and a manual tranny.
