Eh, I think the current GTI looks better than either the Scirocco or the new GTI.

I think it's too close in segment to the GTI.

That didn't stop them from selling the original Scirocco for over a decade.
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

That's true but it seems like the market is a lot more crowded and the economy is terrible.  Why did they stop selling it in the first place?  I see that car stealing more from GTI sales than from another manufacturer.

Vinsanity

I'm assuming this is going to be somewhat more $$$ than the GTI; I'll have me a Hyundai Genesis coupe or new V6 Camaro instead.

I don't think it is any more expensive in Europe.

Slightly. Maybe $1000 - 2000 over the GTI. But If im right, the Scirocco is better equipped and handles better.

Why did they stop selling it in the first place?

It was replaced by the 1990 Corrado.  By the mid-'90s sport coupes fell out of fashion and the Corrado faded away.

I second the veto. The market isn't the same as it used to be. You can't have crowed model lineups like you used to, the market isn't big enough.

Simple solution would be to make the GTI a 5-door only and bring the Scirocco in as a replacement for the 3-door.

I 3rd that motion!

The Scirocco also has a different rear suspension, so it's not just a rebadge.  It does drive differently.  I'd be more interested in seeing smaller VWs or even Seats than this (fairly) redundant hatch.  They should have made the design more coupe-like.

Although it did beat the RX-8, 123d, and the TT-S in the coupe portion of Car's PCOTY.

Why does America always get the shaft?

I mean the Scirocco is hot as hell (all over Munich) and given its "badass looks" it should be an appealing sports car. Certainly looks better than the boring Golf.

The Scirocco is a mix between Golf and Eos (Passat) suspension components and therefore substantially improved over the Golf.

The Golf is Germany's Camry, the Jetta is Germany's Buick, that's why they are so boring (with the exception of the GTI). The Scirocco is marketed for total hotness and caters to a total different market segment over here.
That of course may be different in the US where the Golf / Jetta are hyped as young and stylish, so the Scirocco doesn't really have a different market position. From that point of view the move of VW is understandable.

I still second the motion of the 3 door Scirocco and the 4 door GTI...

Cookie Monster

I'd rather have a Fit/Yaris competitor (Polo!) than the Scirocco.

I've driven a GTI, Jetta 2.5, Eos, and I own a Jetta Wolfsburg.  Buick doesn't exactly come into play.

And after driving those three cars and owning one, I can't believe that adding Eos to Golf gets you something better.  The Eos is too soft compared to the A series cars.

Image wise it is the Buick of Germany (in Germany). Only oooooold gezers drive Jettas. (in particular the old models and the Vento and Bora).
The Golf is the Camry imagewise (everyone from school kids to professors is driving one ). The Golf is the default choice when buying a car for a lot of Germans without further thinking...

The European mags uniformely say that the Scirocco handles fine. I refrain from any judgement as I have only driven the GTI and no EOS and Sciroccos yet...

^^ Are you saying the handling of the GTI sucks????

No, I just am not doing any comparison between the handling of the GTI and the Scirocco because I have not driven the Scirocco (yet). The GTI handles great, it is a very fun to drive car

Yawn

Bring it over! Most Americans are boring and dont like variety.. There are select people that will appreciate it very much.. If it doesnt cost much to send over  and no marketing costs are involved I say why not!

That's interesting since in the US, the Jetta is primarily driven by highschool and college aged girls (particularly the Vento and Bora).

I'm seeing fewer and fewer young girls in A5 Jettas (compared to A4s).  Although I do see one quite often, though I'd hardly call her a girl (mid 40s) and it's a TDI.

Middle aged women also seem to like them, but you're right, it seems the MkIII and IV cars appealed to women more than the MkV (seems a more even mix of male and female drivers).
