Whether you can fit your feet under the front seats has a lot to do with where your legs end up.

I don't know about short persons (since I ain't one) but a crap quality ride and un-comfortable seats will spoil the trip no matter if you stretch your legs horizontally.

Still, there needs to be some room back there. I can't imagine ever wanting a Golf for a family-hauler. If some people do, good for them.
