The gear ratios would be different due to the addition of the 7th gear, right?

What I've noticed is that a lot of cars I've seen tested that has available both a 6sp MT and 6sp+ AT, the AT is as fast; I've seen this in the 335i, G37, new Camaro, CTS, Corvette, and now the 370Z.

I think it has to do with the ratios in combination with inherent AT characteristics - faster shifts (in performance ATs) and slippage in the torque converter. Also, I wouldn't be surprised should the new crop of ATs are more efficient than their predecessors.
