Pagani launches track-only Zonda R

Banking on at least 15 world citizens not feeling the current economic crunch, Italy?s Pagani has released the first official images of its track-only Zonda R. The Zonda R was actually quietly unveiled at the Vienna Motor Show a few weeks ago, but these are the first official images of the company?s latest supercar.
The new coupe was designed with one goal in mind: ?the ultimate performance at the racetrack without any implications of rules, except for safety,? the company said.

The Zonda R was designed from scratch, with only 10 percent of Zonda F components being carried over. It features a 739 horsepower 6.0L V12 from Mercedes? AMG division, derived from the CLK GTR race car. Power will be dealt with via Pagani?s first paddle-shift gearbox.

The wheelbase has grown by 47mm, the overall length by 394 mm and the track is increased by 50mm. The bodywork and aerodynamics have been modified to offer maximum downforce. Much of the Zonda R is constructed of carbon-fiber and titanium mix, resulting in just a 2,360 pound curb weight.

That power combined with super light weight means the Zonda R can accelerate from 0-60 in 3 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 233 mph.

The project began at the request of an Italo-American customer, enthusiast and proud owner of three Zondas. Pagani will build 16 examples of the Zonda R, although only 15 will be up for sale (one example will be kept by Pagani). Only the super-wealthy need apply, with the track day toy set to list from $1.8 million.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Beautiful, should have no issue selling out.

Not a fan of the tachometer on the steering wheel however, too gimicky for what is otherwise such a serious car.

NomisR

Beautiful, but I wouldn't get it even if I can afford it because I would prefer an open wheel car for the track if it's going to be a dedicated track car.

And more importantly, why is there a giant piece of plastic covering the tach?  I can barely read that thing even when it's still, let alone when it's spinning around while i'm turning.

Perhaps because it doesn't rev past the plastic.

I wouldn't be surprised if the tach remained stationary in the wheel as it turned.

Well if it does, then the whole steering wheel stays stationary when you're turning......

it still covers up a bunch of the steering wheel. And even if the tach remains stationary, the after  mentioned piece of plastic wouldn't as it is attached to the steering wheel.

So is this a legitimate FIA race car or is this the kind of thing you show up to the country club race track with to upstage your friends with an FXX or MC12?

I don't usually use the tach. I go by sound.

For $1.8 million, I'm sure you could pull a few strings to get the cover removed if you wanted from the factory.

I don't think the cover obstructs anything. It looks like the dashes stop at 10,400.

It blocks 3k and under.  But on the track, you won't ever be below 3k so you don't need it.

No it doesn't.

1, 2 and 3k are all the tiny little dashes between the needle (at zero) and 4. If you look closely you can see the 1, 2 and 3.
