2011 BMW 5-Series GT revealed

Images have leaked onto the Web from a private showing of the 2011 BMW 5-Series GT, which will be unveiled officially at the Geneva Motor Show. The hatchback is billed as a ?concept,? but the production version will be almost identical, minus the quirky interior details. The ?GT? is merely one variant of the all-new 5-Series. A regular sedanand wagon will also be introduced this year. Even if the hatchback body isn?t your thing, this car provides a clear idea of how the front end of all the new 5-Series models will look.

Showing its love for new acronyms, BMW has dubbed the vehicle a ?Progressive Activity Sedan.? We suppose ?luxury hatchback? is simply too bland a label for the German automaker.

The roomy vehicle has four large, fully adjustable seats and, as sources are telling us, small tables as well. A recent teaser video compares the car?s cabin to flying first class, so small tables seem like a distinct possibility. Depending on the options and packages, the GT will be riding on 18- to 21-inch wheels. All-wheel-drive will definitely be an option, as well as several of the bells and whistles from the newest 5- and 7-Series models.
Overall styling appears to be similar to the X6, but the vehicle has a taller roofline arc ? allowing for more headroom in back ? and the rear hatch looks more cargo-friendly.

Other interior touches will include a panoramic sunroof, fully adjustable rear seats and a sealed rear trunk are, in addition to plenty of other storage spots.

Earlier reports said BMW?s next MPV would go head-to-head with Mercedes? R-class, but BMW instead decided to build a sedan-like crossover. This is probably a good decision for BMW as it better suits the automaker?s values and the R-class has been met with a lukewarm reception at best.

Looks like Bangle left just in time, so Hooydonk has to explain this abomination.  Trick hatch though.

I love the interior, but the outside looks like some Lancer/BMW mishmash.  I miss good-looking BMWs.

I don't care about all that shit.  I'll be going to college to get an education at a cost to my parents.  I'm not going to fool around.

The front end does remind me of the new Lancer. Nice catch.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Dumb, pointless and ugly. People will flocking to buy one.

Don't like the orange/brown of the interior, the texture (or it might be the photo quality) makes it look like a Clay model.

For at least the first few months, people will be flocking to this car like wildfire.  It's not particularly ugly but it's not my style.  A new BMW is like a new variety of Pepsi:  everyone will be buying it up until the initial popularity takes a nosedive.

Our dealership sold at least 4 or 5 X6s during $4/gal. gas months at about $60k a pop, so I have no doubt they will be able to do the same with this.

the front reminds me of the CS concept:

Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

TBR

I rather like it. I'd probably take the traditional notch-back variant, but this still looks pretty good imho.

Yes, I already knew it took a lot of its cues from that (as did the new 7-series); I'm just saying it also resembles the new Lancer.

In fact the front ends of the Evo and that CS are not unlike each other.

Wow, it looks like a lowered X6 with a Lancer-esque nose.  What's the purpose of this car again?

Everything fore the B-pillar looks decent, but the design just looks chunky in back.

Still, I love the interior.

The hatch is stupid. I'd prefer a regular hatch.

Is it bad that I like this thing though? :mask:

Yes.  Absolutely yes.

MrH

Yeah, I don't understand the dual hatch opening.  Why would you want to open it without the glass going up?  Needlessly complex and heavy.

Skoda did it first!

And it looks like they took they ugly car-like X6 and lowered even more.

Market saturation of pointless cars in a dying market seems stupid.

I actually like it. Honestly, I hope cars go more in this design direction in the future because the design is much more practical than the standard sedan. I don't understand why Americans love the sedan so much because station wagons are worlds more practical, and there is no drawback at all.

Tave

I wish that back plane was about .75X as big, but overall I think it's a decent effort. Not my cup of tea, though.

Oh, and BMW, this is how you make a hatch that looks like a sedan, for future reference:

I actually thing a 3er hatchback that looks like the E90 would be so awesome. Even a 5 series hatch like that would be sweet.
