In the 90s they had the most competitive domestic product line-up, only marred by extreme cost cutting measures enacted by Bob Eaton (supposedly the Neon head gasket problems were a result of a decision he made that saved $2/car).

Avantis are cool, but they didn't save the company. Studebaker needed a Mustang, or a Beetle, not something to go chasing after Aston Martins with.

I believe Bob Eaton singlehandedly destroyed that company.

I also believe that Lee Iaccoca opened that floodgate for no other reason than not liking Bob Lutz -- contempt over confidence.
