Spied! 2010 Dodge Ram Hemi Hybrid
Posted by Mike Levine | April 17, 2009

A diesel-powered Dodge Ram 1500 has been delayed, but the hybrid Hemi version is definitely happening for 2010. Our spy photographers caught it running undisguised in public during final testing.

The so-called two-mode hybrid powertrain was co-developed with GM, Mercedes and BMW. It?s the same setup found in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra gas-electric hybrid pickups.

GM is supplying Chrysler with the advanced two-mode transmissions that will be used. The electrically variable gearbox houses two 60kW electric motors that can power the truck on their own up to about 25 mph, depending on driving conditions. As the multi-displacement 5.7-liter pushrod Hemi V-8 gas engine kicks in, the electric motors will seamlessly support it, individually or in tandem, at low and high speeds, helping the engine enter fuel-saving four-cylinder mode sooner and stay in it longer to achieve maximum gas mileage. Regenerative braking is used to capture energy that would normally be lost during braking or deceleration. The energy is stored in the batteries for later use.

The GM full-size hybrids can tow up to 6,100 pounds. The Ram is expected to tow about the same amount.

Looks good!  Anyone see the interior yet?

Well, I hope it's more successful than the GMs that use that same two-mode drivetrain.  They don't seem to be selling that good.

I didn't think so either, but the Tahoe and Escalade hybrids are everywhere in LA.

Must be a regional success, but I've seen maybe one or two on the road anywhere else that I've  been recently (CO, NH).

Did I mention that I really like the new Ram, and I think that if it had any other badge on it but Dodge's it would sell like hotcakes?

I take it we're no longer going to get it as the next Titan?

Uh, the hybrid Tahoe/Yukon have been an absolute flop, with only ~1,100 sold in 2009 through the end of May...

What ever happened to Ford's Hydraulic hybrid system? Last I heard was USPS (or was it UPS?) using with great success.

Well, if it offers a sizable difference of MPG's versus the regular rams without sacrificing utility, I could see fleets picking them up to possibly save money.

Aside from the Volt, GM hybrids are a Joke.

Bet on virtually zero fleet interest at a base MSRP of $53k which includes a ~$5k premium premium...

the Teuton

Fleets don't want totally loaded up cars at $53k.  The problem is that GM can't justify selling such a vehicle for any less, and consumers can't justify paying that much for a vehicle without all the goodies.

Aside from the Volt, GM hybrids are a Joke.

The problem with this hybrid system is primarily that it is difficult to tell how much of the fuel economy gains seen by the Tahoe/Yukon hybrids are due to the lightening and aerodynamic improvements and atkinson cycle engine, and how much of it is directly attributed to the hybrid powertrain.  Add to that the fact that it is not a cheap vehicle by any means and you end up with a very poor value proposition.  I see Cougs has already listed the cost of the powertrain, which would require many years of use to see any benefit from.

If they applied the same aero and weight improvements, and otherwise stripped down the Tahoe/Yukon of anything extraneous they would probably see an immediate improvement in fuel economy.  I'd rather buy something like that than a bloated and overpriced Hybrid with a dubious fuel economy improvement.

Really the ONLY hybrid that offers anything resembling strong value is the Honda Insight.

Using a Chrysler V8 engine in anything that's supposed to fuel efficient is like Mazda deciding to build a Prius competitor that uses a rotary engine.

Why wouldn't they use the 4.7 instead?

He just made a relevant point about the additional cost of the hybrid powertrain.  Maybe he got the vehicle wrong, but the powertrain is the same, so the point is still valid.  You on the other hand had to come in and jump his case.

So correct Cougs, the person who corrects everyone on everything else even when he doesn't have a fucking clue what he's talking about, and I am a troll?

His point was that the Tahoe/Yukon Hybrid don't get fleet sales because of their price, that isn't an applicable point to a discussion about the Ram Hybrid when much of the Tahoe/Yukon's price premium is for equipment that fleets don't order (leather seats, etc).

Note- To be clear, I think it is quite unlikely that the Ram Hybrid will represent a good value for fleets, but to use the msrp of a completely different vehicle competing in a completely different segment as proof of that is nothing short of asinine.
