E-Class? 5-Series? Good used cars?

The W212 is way out of my price range. The auto 528i has a 4 speed auto and some stupid little issues that turn me off. Still lookin at the W211 but less into it now. Probably gonna go with an Acura CL or old RL...

For the 528i. Reviews I've read said it gets winded easily... 5 spd would be perfect but is not an option

Wow. Unless you get a 6MT Type-S, that's the definition of LAME.

If you want a Japanese luxury sedan, why don't you look into an older LS400 or GS400/GS430? The RL freaking sucks.

actually, a late-90's RWD Lexus does seem to be right up sporty's alley

The old LS400s were a little soft but fun nonetheless. Lots of power.

I still really like the second gen G cars from Lexus.

They looked like turd (not figuratively, literally, they were shaped like a giant dog turd)

The 2nd generation (especially the face lifted model LS) were awesome cars.  As has been said, they are a bit soft, but otherwise, fantastic.

Oddly enough, the only two major problems with cars we have EVER had occurred in both LS's we owned.  Though, it's a case of horribly bad luck, as most studies point to the LS being a extremely reliable car.

I'm gonna see how lame it is when I go to test drive one. The RL does look pretty lame... I really wish they had continued with the Legend coupe as I would get one of those in a heartbeat from like 98-99. The first gen CL is decent though... not exactly a thriller, but quick enough stock (low 7s to 60, mid 15s to the 1/4), with the same suspension as my Accord now and all the nice entry level luxury bits (leather, sunroof, auto climate, power seats etc). Plus it runs on 88 octane gas and sounds good with an exhaust. I think it could be a good time that wouldn't present the opportunity for me to get into much trouble. Plus with their prices I could keep a nice bit of change for savings and little light mods.

I've been looking at LSs and they're still out of my price range. I'm looking at the ones from 96 up cause I think they had the 290HP V8s and 5ATs. I got one search result on Autotrader for one within 100 miles of me. They are nice though; one of my friend's parents let him drive one in high school and it was pretty beastly in the straight line. We don't get much else in NYC so that's my priority for fun.

The GS is easier to find but a friend of mine had one for about a year and a half; they're cool cars and even the 6 cylinder is pretty peppy. But I don't find them attractive at all; they look bloated and dated to me now. And the interiors are high quality material wise but remind me of top of the line Camrys more than the luxury cars they're supposed to be. Not that the Acuras are much better, but the prices commanded by GS300s don't line up with what you get IMO.

The 2nd gen Q... meeehhhhh such a half hearted attempt by Nissan and really representative of their worst period ever. The V8 wasn't even 4.5 liters, it was 4.1. I would rather try out one of those FWD V8 STSs or even a Maxima GLE before that Q.

I think I am set on those CLs though. They're not awesome incredible cars but they have most of what I want, I know my way around 75% of their components and they're pretty cheap.

I was thinking a 94-96 model. Find a low-mileage example, and they should be at least as reliable as a W210 or even a E39. Even th 93-97 Sevilles proved to be less prone to trouble than the 98+ ones. (I think they finally worked out the bugs eventually on that one, though)

BimmerM3

Last fall I did some research into E39s. The only major issue that I came across was the cooling issue - don'r remember specifics except that the guys from BimmerForums recommended that the radiator be changed ever 60k miles. I was looking at manual examples though, so I don't really know anything about the autos.

Other thoughts:

I know it's a bit smaller, but have you considered an IS300? One of my friends had one in high school and I really liked it.

I'm also not exactly sure what you're looking for mileage wise, but original Lexus SCs really aren't that bad.

ISs are meh... a friend of mine had one in high school, and I was disappointed with it then. I'm not crazy about the SC's exterior, but it has a nice interior and is prob. quick enough. Plus I'm seeing a few in my price range. I'll check them out.

I've never actually driven an SC, but an enthusiast friend of mine had one and absolutely loved it.

Now that you also consider totally different cars: Why not an Audi A6? I know they are said to be unreliable, but ours is as solid as a tank. IMO they are beautiful cars, they drive absolutely great and sould be easy to find in your price range. Nice american cars like Oldsmobiles aren`t your thing, right?

2o6 is making an unusual amount of sense.  Scary.

So I have to ask:  Given your specs, why not?
