I think of the 80's more than the 90's. And you're correct that they won't be coming back. I can't even think of what the new RX-7 would look like without pop-ups. It makes me sad.

The probe and 240's were the best examples of late 80's popups, along with a some 300 z's and a few others. But popups died in the 90's, that is were i got the image from. Every car with popup headlights was either cancelled or redesigned by the mid 90's, the death of the popup.

And the Lotus Esprit.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's so as a kid we all though of pop-ups as "exotic" most of the time. I'll always have a soft spot for them. And most of my favorite cars happen to have them as well.

C5, late 90's or early 00's iirc. I believe you are right, the last of the last. The C5 has alot of last gen RX7 in it. Either way popups are not good for aerodynamics. Also with the whole daytime running lights bs they have no place in the modern auto.

Yeah, the NA Miata, AW11 and a few other of my favorite cars have popups as well.

At first I didn't really like them but now I love popups.

I guess they are gone then... and they'd probaby look crappy on new cars which have to have the hood be really high for pedestrians.

Jellybean, every car i can think of from the 90's and early oo's have a natural jellybean curve to them. 240's, rx's 300 z's, probe's , mx 6's and vettes. It just isn't the style anymore. I'm fine with it, i like the "flame surface" sytel of design we are getting now. I LOVE the new z4, and would rock one in a heartbeat.

I don't like the new swoopy flame surfacing... I'm kind of odd I guess, I like simple, boxy designs like the AE86 and the AW11, and low slunk sleek cars like the NA.

I guess it's the chris v in me, i realize that some styles come to an end. I'll never forget them, but i'll appreciate the evolution that brings us a new catagory of design. I hate to admit it, but it's time for something new. The best you can do is horde. It's what i'm doing, i'll gobble up a few classics(i have a S13, i'm going to get a FD) and move on with the times,.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of new car designs. They all seem to have awkward areas and messy details.

But I do love the new Z4. :ohyeah:

I think the NB was the best looking of the MX-5s.

From some angles I like the NB more than the NA. But then I like some of the things on the NA more. It's really a toss up and depends on the color and rims for me.

Something about the front of the NA I don't like.  It looks great from the back (low slung and wide), but then up front it looks a bit...chipmunk-like.

I'm sorry, that's the best I could come up with.

I thought the NA was very jellybean shaped, whereas the NB had a bit more muscularity.  The front and back were a bit more sculpted with some subtle curves and bulges near the wheelwells.  To me, the NB sort of looked like the NA hit the gym and got some better definition.  NC sort of reverted back to the NA's jellybean shape, but with a blunter nose.

Overall, I like the NB the best, then the NA and NC.

I like how the doors and quarter look on the NB. It looks like the FD RX-7 and that's a good thing. But I like that ass end of the NA way more then I do the NB. And while I thing the NA's "barn door" headlamps are too big and should have been smaller like the RX-7, I like them more than the cheap plastic headlamps on the NB.

The interior on the NB looks way better than the NA. But I can't fit in it at all so I could never own one unless it was a race car and I gutted everything out of it. And I"m thinking about doing that if I can find one that's been hit in the front end and I could buy it for cheap.

Cookie Monster

I don't like the pre facelifted NB's... they look awkward. I still likethe NA over the NB but the facelifted one looks nice.

I think they're defeating the purpose of the current Miata with this offering.

yeah, much like MG did by offering the Midget alongside of the MGB, right?

You've apparently never been in an MG Midget or Austin Healy Sprite. ;)

I have, and it was like riding around in a deathtrap.  There was just a piece of sheet metal between you and the front bumper of...well...a Ford Focus.  I just don't see how they could make a car that small, that light, and still have room for 6 footers and still meet safety regulations.

Yes, but it just barely outlasted the Firebird, which had them until the day it died too.

Well, I'll keep encouraging them to try!

Sports cars should be small and light.  If you need a car to live in, buy a VW California.  (Which I want to do anyway; I think it would sell nicely here, too.)

So do I. I don't know how small and light they can get away with an affordable production car like this these days. But I want them to try and make it as close to the old cars as possible.
I for one don't give a shit about safety crap. Hell, I pulled the air bag out of my car.

You have a good point, but the market was different back then. Today I don't think it's very wise to have two small convertibles.
