Maybe so - but also 10x the work.  I agree the green egg seems like a bit of a ripoff, not sure what the other options are, but I'm not setting up a flower pot contraption every time I cookout.

five parts

the bottom
the top,
the heating element
the cover for the element,
the grill.

Assemble it once, which ought to take all of 5 minutes, and it shouldn't be any more difficult than using the egg. 

I think a trip to Home Depot's garden shop is in order this weekend.  I'll make one and report back to the committee.  Maybe I'll smoke a small brisket.
