Time to see if a bigger dealer network really does manage to turn sales around. I'm leaning toward no, but it will be interesting.

They should have revived the Lumina name.....

And offered the timeless trunk mounted spoiler/luggage rack feature again.

I dunno, I think they did the right thing with the naming.  Lumina doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth when I say it.

That's a Statesman pictures.  I think we should get that as the Caprice and keep the Impala a cheap FWD full size car.

Caprice doesn't exactly have a sound of desireability to it either.

Honestly, Impala is the best name they got right now, but sadly that slot's taken by a FWD turd.

CJ

A FWD turd that is based off of the old Lumina, no?

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's only vaguely related to the old Lumina.  It's a newer chassis.

CJ

They're both on some form of the W-body, right?

Lumina was first generation W, the Impala is 2nd generation.  The platform was heavily revised/updated in the late 90s.

From an objective standpoint, it makes sense; the G8 is one of the best cars coming out of Detroit. However, I doubt that in and amongst the Impala and Malibu that it is worth the effort; meaning, I'll believe the G8-cum-Caprice when I see it.

You know what would help GM hedge its investment in selling Zeta cars in N. America?

A Cadillac DTS built on the LWB Statesman chassis ... I'm just saying ...

Doesn't that look a little like a C300 Luxury?

That's Detroit, New South Wales.

Excellent news. With the death of the Crown Vic, GM is obviously looking at the police and taxi market. I saw many Caprices over in the UAE, and they are beautiful cars.

Caprice is a huge ugly turd that only cops and taxi drivers drive.  There has got to be a better name that GM could resurrect.  Hell, even Bel Air would be better.

The Caprice is one of my favourite american cars. Especially the station wagon. How cool is that? You could sleep ?n th trunk without even folding down the backseats.
I guess naming the G8 Caprice might be a good thing. Although it doesn`t look like how a Caprice has to look to me.

There is.  I still say the G8 should have been badged as a Buick.  Buick Wildcat has such a nice ring to it.

I'd say it's more of a Buick Roadmaster.

The Roadmaster was a big, floaty car (same as the Caprice), the G8 is anything but.  Wildcat would work.  So would Regal GS or GSX.  Or they could just call it the GrandSport, with the GXP model being the GSX should they keep it around.

That's good news for the northern suburbs. Local Cruze production begins next year, so in conjunction with this announcement hopefully the Holden plant can approach full capacity again.

Bad idea.  GM obviously hasn't learn its lesson re: rebadging.

But the problem is that the G8 is a good car, and it seems like a waste to let it die just because the brand around it is, unfortunately, heading to the pearly gates.

It's only a problem when they're selling the same car in lots of divisions simultaneously. They won't be in this case.
