You may be thinking about the jump seats in the back of some European SL's...those were aftermarket, illegal in many cases, and were even less spacious than those found in a 911.

I've often thought about getting a late model (00' 01' 02') SL-500, but I can't justify loosing the space of my 7 over it.

Convertibles have as much cargo space as you have the ability to tie stuff down.
