Ford's Ecoboost V-6

I just finished a technical training class on this engine and was impressed with the engineering. Gasoline direct injection, twin turbos, 3.5 liters, 355 Horsepower! Haven't driven one yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

SVT666

The SHO version has 365 hp/  The MKZ (or whatever it was called) show car had this engine with 415 hp.

Ecoboost?

Who are they kidding?

Yeah, an excellent effort considering how mediocre Ford has been in engine development the last 15 years or so, but it's a bit too shameless that "Eco" moniker...

You gotta market green at every opportunity these days.  Nobody wants to buy from a "dirty" company.

Yes, I know it's an in-line six and it's not suitable for transverse FWD applications, but I can walk into my Ford dealer right now and get a single-turbo non-DI six with lineage directly traceable back to 1960 producing at least 362hp/393lb-ft (and up to 416hp/417lb-ft) whilst achieving 14/27mpg economy (compared to 15/25 for a Taurus SHO). If this EcoBoost malarkey is apparently the next generation of Ford sixes, I......was expecting a little more?

I was getting 26 MPG in my dad's twin turbo, 500 HP, 590 ft. lbs. torque V12 on the highway a few weeks ago.

Ecoboost supposedly is because if you drive like a little old lady and keep your foot out of it, it will get mileage comparable to a regular 3.5L engine. Of course I'm thinking that in a few years if somebody wrecks one, this would be a fun motor to stuff into something else. Maybe a Miata. zoom zoom :mrcool:

explain
1 Lb-ft literally means the torque generated by 1 pound of force applied radially 1 foot from a point considered the fulcrum. It's literally a lb times a ft

Lb per foot refers to some esoteric quantity you'd find in the middle of an engineering undergrad's unit conversion

_______________________________________________________

As far as Ecoboost or whatever, they need to stuff this & an AWD drivetrain into the Focus. Hell, if they stuffed the regular 3.0 V6 w/an automatic into the Focus I would be pleased.

Ah. Thanks dude.

Isn't ft-lb wrong, though?

Yep.

Lb/ft can indeed be lots of stuff like beam loading.

Lb-ft is typically a torque.

Ft-lbs is typically a moment.

I've seen the latter two used interchangeably but I've heard a few argue that the engineering convention is to use lb-ft for torque.

That's dandy, except that this old little old lady has no reason to buy the Ecoboost.

So "shp4man" stands for Shop Foreman, not Ship Foreman as I had thought for 7 years?

I would love to stuff one in my SVT Focus.  Hopefully it can be mounted north/south and I'll convert the car to RWD.

Yikes- I would hate to work on it!

That drawing is missing the air piping, turbos, waterpump? etc....
What's up with that crazy looking oil cap?

This ain't too bad honestly.

I bet the water pump is behind the timing cover and is chain driven.

My point is if the benefit of Ecoboost is good gas mileage if you don't use the power, what's the point of paying for that power?
