Looks fantastic (probably the first Toyota I've said that about in more than 10 years).  How much power is the 2.0L boxer going to have?

NA makes 150 hp or so in Japan. Turbo makes up to 305 hp in Japan with their 2.0 liter STI.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

Hmmm.  No hood scoop to feed an intercooler, so I'm guessing it's NA.  Unless this car is very light (well under 2700 lbs), 150 just isn't going to cut it at the "just north of 20K" price point.  Keep it under 3000 lbs and give it at least 180 hp and it would be more compelling.

Bullshit, the intercooler can go anywhere, even in the trunk.

Remember, Yamaha is tuning the heads. Chances are it will come to the market with 200 hp or so.

When is this thing scheduled for release?

I don't care for the flat sides (Toyota really needs to get a clue, those fuckers).  How hard is it to make the body roll in near the rocker panels/bottom of the side

Wow...not bad! Something from Toyota we haven't seen in a while - it's not an overweight snooze-mobile. Can't wait to see it in person, especially at that price.

Anyone else see alot of GT-R in the front half of the profile?  The angle over the fenders, and the angle of the roofline, especially with the blacked out A pillar and the backwards sloping window line?

Oh, absolutely.  But since it looks so much better than the GTR, I didn't think it was worth mentioning.

W/Yamaha heads the sky is the limit. By the sky I mean about 200-220 HP.

Sigma Projects

doubt anything over 210 real hp, whenever Japanese say they are making 210 PS usually only makes 201 SAE HP here. Modding the engine if it has a yamaha worked head, yea you'll be able to get pretty high numbers. I just think stock there is no way it will be above 210hp and be around the $20K mark.

That's the first thing I thought.

Well, after I made it past the sculpted hood and front end. I hope those get tweaked a little before production. And I think red is an unfortunate color to show off that part of the car.

I'm not really feeling it. Rear and side profile look good, the interior is radical and refreshing but the front is just bah...

The original AE86 looks much better and has that "typical 1980s Japanese compact sports car look".

And in all honesty: THERE IS PROBABLY NO MARKET FOR SUCH A CAR HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Toyota's in Europe sell because they're affordable and reliable and their dealerships are rated highly for service. That's about it.

If you want a small, sporty compact here you can find something from Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Mazda (albeit in FWD) etc. Pay a little more and you can drive a RWD BMW 1-Series Coupe.

or you can have RWD for the same price as a VW GTI, which is what this car will be for N. America. Sucks for you guys if you're not getting it; I would think that a small lightweight sporty car would do well in Europe.

Yeah, that's what I was just thinking.  I don't believe there's a requirement on actual bonnet height, just clearance between it and the engine, so they have room to put a pillow in there so a ped's head has a soft and comfy landing place.

I am sure this thing will come turbocharged at a price lower than a base 116i.

I'm not really crazy about the looks, but desperate times call for desperate design languages.

The VW GTI and R32 are low-volume niche models that hardly have an impact on Golf sales in Europe. Some people here even question their existence claiming that "they're not needed".

Toyota is known for building affordable and reliable cars here. That's it. They're not known for delivering on sportiness, especially after the cancellation of the Celica and MR2 (Supra sales here were so low). I suspect that the Toyota buying crowd in Europe would look towards other brands for a sporty car. Mazda is the choice for a sporty Japanese car in Europe.

Don't get me wrong. They can probably sell this car in Europe, it just won't be a smashing success in my opinion given Toyota's boring reputation. Also, this car won't be that cheap once it is sold in Europe. Insurance rates will kill it for the youth market because in some areas of Germany the insurance rates start at 140% for people from the age range 18-23. Only after 23 does it drop by about 5% each year. In that case these people go for something used or really cheap like a normal Peugeot 206/207 or VW Polo / Golf or Toyota Corolla etc.

The 116i is marketed with a focus on its handling, not performance.  :ohyeah:

Even if it is cheaper than a 116i, that doesn't guarantee success. See my response to Vinsanity above about the expensive insurance rates in Germany (Europe). That coupled to a sports car (no matter how affordable) on paper essentially tells the motor authority "this person might be a risk" (young age / driving newbie [18-23] + 140% insurance + sporty car = RISK).
