Does this include the Impreza 2.5RS?

If it does, that's my pick.
No.

That came out in 1998.

The RS only started at $18something in 1998. It was a solid bargain.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

So? Look at 2o6's post. We're supposed to be in 1995 or 1996.

95 Civic, no contest.  The MkIII was the worst generation of A series cars.  Stodgy, plain, and questionable reliability.  Make mine an EX sedan, 5MT.

Yeah, a 2WD car with good snow tires is a better winter vehicle than an AWD car with all-seasons.  I've driven both combinations extensively.  AWD helps you accelerate.  It does very little for braking and turning in winter driving.  Tires are where it's at.  All-seasons is a misnomer, IMO.  They are 3-season tires, and a compromise at that.  But doable, I've had all-seasons on a RWD pickup (well, it was 4WD at one point), and several FWD cars, including the Mazda.

Because it'll be faster. Meanwhile, AWD gets you traction you don't really need, more weight, less power, and worse gas mileage.

For a year round car, I'll take the agility of FWD over the stodginess of AWD every time.

Oh, and TBR... the hp/lbs ratio is like a 2lbs difference between the 2.5RS and the Neon.  I'd rather have the one that isn't a shitbox, personally.

I'm thinking the GT probably cost a good deal more than these old econoboxes when they were all new, but I'd even take a 4-banger Probe/MX-6 over any of them.

Yes it was, IMO, and the latter doesn't matter since the RS was cheaper than the GT-S and Integra which it was aimed at.  It's like the difference between AAA and the Majors.

If the Impreza RS was aimed at a class above the Neon, why are you comparing it to the Neon?

And, the Neon was not a shitbox. It was in an entirely different league from the Cavalier and was one of the most competitive compact sedans Detroit has ever offered. The only two compact American sedans I would say measured up as well to the competition as the Neon did was the original Saturn S-Series and the Focus.

The Neon was a seriously good car.

the Teuton

I like to think that the original Neon was a great idea executed poorly. It was a great little package, but the details and fitment quality sucked balls.

We had a 1996 coupe, and that thing was in the dealer for problems constantly, especially with the door jambs since they didn't line up right, and the dome light would come on in turns.

The Impreza was a much more...durable...car overall.

There were build issues, with some cars. The one I had was put together very well.

The big stuff does tend to be pretty solid, except for the head gasket (what would have been if Chrysler had spend $10/car to do it right), but, yeah, some cars did have small, niggling quality problems.

Granted, the Neon did have some issues, you can use that anecdotal evidence for ANY car.

From a performance perspective, I would own a Neon ACR over an Impreza RS. Besides, the RS is too new and expensive, so it doesn't count.

I'm not the comparing it to a Neon... for some reason you were though...

Anyway, other than the Cavalier it's the cheapest car I've ever driven.  Saying it compared favorably to that car isn't saying much...

Truth be told, if I had the money to buy a new econobox in 1996, I would just use that money to buy a later model of one of these:

Actually, I'd really want a coupe, but they only made them through 1984
