Call 911 had a similar thread/poll awhile back.

Say it's 1995-1996. You have enough money to buy a new compact car. What do you choose, and why?

I THINK that's all the cars on the market at the time.

I think it's kinda bland.

I voted for the Neon. It has quality issues, but it's kooky styling and outright power make me happy.

92-95 Civic.

It makes me said that we no longer have those simple, cleanly styled cars anymore.

Don't they usually get a lot of rust as well? No problems like that here at least, but still they are riced out. They are reliable cars though, I'd buy one with over 150k miles as long as it was maintained well.

Yes, OH is generally unkind to Civics. Not a lot of rust, though. Generally, over the wheel arches and the rocker panels. I don't think that's a problem.

Also, EG>EK>EF.

2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

Not really.

Cavalier:    $ 10,265 to $ 14,350
Civic $9890 - 16280
Impreza:    $ 11,195 to $ 16,500

The Civic's depreciation is much lower than the rest, too, outweighing the extra cost you paid up front.

Not the most reliable option, but I think it is the best combination of performance, value, and comfort. Really a fantastic car, if only they had put a proper head gasket on it.

The only thing it has going for it is that it's a hatch and it handles decent.

Otherwise, it's slow, unreliable, hard to fix, spartan, and really not all that spacious. And the GTI has fail written all over it.

I imagine the Cavalier had more standard equipment and more rebates.

I voted for the 95 Civic, which I'd be getting at the end of the model year as the 96s started to show up.

The Pirate

Owned a 2000 Civic, put a ton of low maintenance and low cost miles on it, absolutely loved that car.  Yeah, it doesn't have the Teutonic feel of the Jetta, the moves of the Mazda (though there was less of a gap between the 95-98 Protege and the 96-00 Civic - the Proteg? gained it's prowess with the '99 model and particularly the '01 update), or the price advantage of the Koreans, but it was a fantastic little package.

Great visibility, comfortable, very good transaxle and engine, and one of the better cars in the class as far as spirited driving goes.  And the worst mileage I ever saw was 26 mpg (I've been in the teens in my Mazda).

So, give me the 96-00 Civic ( I don't like the 01+ models nearly as much).

I had a DX - no cruise, no power goodies.  I liked it, but I was a little bored at the time - wanted the toys, etc.  The Mazda popped up with it's power goodies, cruise, sunroof, sporty suspension and wheels/tires, and I had a blast driving it.  Plus, I got an incredibly good deal on the Mazda, whilst selling the Honda to a friend that was in need of a good car for cheap.
