Ok, instead of choosing a tight handling 4-place coupe, you decide to ditch the backseat and start looking at 2-seater, low-power, inexpensive two-seater coupes.

Because of the already limited market, I'm opening it up to the entire world.

The Year is 1997.

As always, let me know if I missed anything.

The Mk2 MR2 is not a roadster.  It wasn't even a targa top.

And what about the BMW Z3?

It seats two. And it was a Targa. I meant sporty two seaters.

I thought the Z3 would be too expensive......but since I have the Alfa and was considering putting up the Lotus/Kia Elan.........I guess the Z3 will fit.

Onslaught

I'm a big fan of the MR2. But I don't think of it as a convertible or comparable to the cars on this list. So I'm kicking it off the list for me.
So out of the rest of the cars I'm picking the MX-5.  And it's not even close.

Oh, and the 98 MX-5 was the NB not the NA. They went until 90-97.

The Del Sol isn't really a convertible/roadster in my book either.

Either the BMW or the MG.

Didn't the Boxster come out in 97?

Yep. But it wasn't as cheaps as these cars were.

Z3 2.8 or M Roadster. The car was glorious, and it granted the gift of snap oversteer with its wonderful Z axle as a holiday surprise if you were playing too rough.

Wonderful car.

I probably should have said "two-seaters" rather than roadsters.

Was it at least as cheap as the Z3?

the Teuton

The Boxster started at $39,980 in 1997. Trust me, I've wanted one for that long.

I've just driven the Z3, though, so I have reference for falling in love with it. The 007 factor doesn't hurt, either.

It'd be down to the MR-2, MX-5 and Z3 for me. I'd have to drive them to really decide, and price would probably greatly factor into my decision.

I chose Z3 on the poll.

It depend on what Z3 I had to pick from. You couldn't give me the one with the 4 banger in it.

Was the Z3 in 007?

It was the Bond car in Goldeneye (albeit it was only shown for all of 30 seconds).

W/o a doubt, for me, the MR-2 Turbo. No explanation needed.

Miata. But I've never had any experience with the non USDM cars, so I can't really say.

From that list, definitely the MX-5.  It's aged well.

The only thing the Alfa will give you is recurring reliability problems.

Raza

It looks like the Boxster was 39K in 1997.  The Z3 was somewhat cheaper.  29K for the 1.9 and 35.9K for the 2.8.

Mind you, the 1.9 had 138bhp.  For comparison, the Mazda MX-5 was 17K and had 133.

Hmm. The MX5 is as good as ever, but the Barchetta could be fun, too. That MR2 would be a sharp drive, and even though the Alfa will fall to bits, it still looks good.

Drat. I can't decide.

ChrisV

I love the Alfas, and the non US market cars could be fun just because of being unique. But if it were my money, it'd be between the Miata and MR2. The Miata is just an all around great little sports car, but the MR2, especially in turbo form, can be made very fast for not a lot of money.
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

zps2004

I would say the Miata would be my number 1 choice and the Z3 would be #2 but only with a 6 cylinder.  The 2nd gen MR-2's are fun, but lack soul to me.  The other 2 gens are great though.
