This is the theory that my roommate and I agree on: the last idiot to replace the flexplate did not torque down the bolts correctly, and/or did not put loctite on the threads. Five of the bolts loosened over time and fell out, leaving one. Neither the single hole in the flexplate, nor the single bolt were strong enough to withstand the massive torque load of the 2.2L engine, and they failed.

It's alive! I fix it. It only took about 8 hours to put the transmission back in, and half of that was riding around looking for parts.
