It is possible to to build up-to-date, small, tough, economical work trucks. Why do not Ford & GM do so, keep their products current?

The 4-cylinder, yes.  The 4.3 liter equipped vehicles (comparable a 3.9L Dakota) are much quicker than the Dodge.

What the hell kind of Dakota were you driving that was slower than the preza?

EDIT: After browsing Wikipedia: Fucking hell, they put some pitiful engines in that truck.

Ford does. They just don't sell it here. They have an updated Ranger on the world market - they don't import it here because of the chicken tax and probably don't want to drop serious cash on retooling a plant to build it in North America. The potential market is too small.
