The 1st gen G20 was pretty forgettable, but the 2nd Gen was even more forgettable.

Nice Nissan Primera!

Proudly Adelaide-built! :praise:

Surprisingly good cars, I must say. I went for a ride in a friend of a friend's Magna VR-X today, and the amount of controllable oversteer that could easily be induced was quite remarkable. Granted, the wet road helped things along somewhat, but a lively thing nonetheless.

A Decked out Primera with the Nissan SR motor was actually quite nifty. Shame that 2nd gens had a Torsion Beam versus the IRS of the 1st Gen. It was sort of a precursor to the Acura TSX.

The US got the name Diamante. I know a few kids named Diamante. Pretty sad.

How did it do in the US? Probably bombed, right?

The current Nissan's Nissan sells in the US as Infiniti's at least look upscale. That generation Primera looked like a generic Japanese economy car of the day. And it was sold in the US as an Infiniti!?

Actually, it did rather well. It didn't light the world on fire, but it did well enough to find buyers who didn't want a 3-series, C-class or A4......but thought a Jetta or similar was too cheap inside.

The 3-series, C-class and A4 didn't exactly look that upscale.

I don't get the pencil comparison.

Oh, it wasn't anything profound or anything like that.

I just tried to say they didn't have a lot of horsepower in a cooler way.

Next to those, the Primera looks especially like what it is: an economy car.  :ohyeah:

Yes, that much. It looks like a generic cheap sedan with a body kit -- and for good reason.

I've always thought that the G20 looked pretty classy.

Cookie Monster

I've always thought the G20 had good looks but never could compare to the Germans yet was too overpriced to compete with anything else.

Which it was.

Classy for an economy car, perhaps. Not luxury-brand classy.

IIRC, It wasn't overpriced, since the German makes' cars cost more. A Base 323i (1999) was 26K. A Base G20 (non Touring = no LSD) started at 20K. In 95' It wasn't as bad; 22K for a base G20, and 25K for a 318 Sedan. (Not a ti, ti's weren't directly comparable to a sedan) G20 had more HP (140 vs 138), more room, was likely to be more reliable, and was cheaper and still was pretty nice inside.

Honestly, It was not that bad.

Relatively recently? The Malaise Era.

Don't forget, I see them here all the time as NISSAN PRIMERA'S. They look like Nissan's: not Infiniti's. The Nissan's badge engineered as Infiniti's at least look premium and classy. The G20/Primera looked like an economy car.

Weren't the Primeras/G20s built in the UK? I think they were one of the early cars Nissan built when they moved in after the UK's domestic brands imploded.

Nissan did build Euro-spec Primeras in the UK, but US-spec G20s were sourced from Japan.

Here's one so forgettable that even I almost forgot about it.

And it's twin, the Chevrolet Spectrum.

Mazda Xedos 9 - Mazda's first venture into the premium car market in Europe. Big flop.

Volkswagen K70 - Not even VW fanatics today know it existed.  :tounge:

Mercedes C107 SLC Coupe - Sad but true. These cars have been all but forgotten. The R107 SL on the other hand, which the lengthened SLC is based on, is very popular though.
