I'd stick with my VW camper.  Goes almost anywhere, gets decent mileage, is easily repaired, and sleeps four (five with the cot), and has a small kitchen.

Model T.  Simple, reliable, a blacksmith can fix it. Low compression burns crap gasoline.  Goes damn near anywhere.  No electronics to turn to crap.  A few EMPs would turn what you guys are picking into stationary scupltures.

Also, if we're going with the EMP angle, I'm guessing there would be full on nuclear war, in which an EMP really would be far down the "why were screwed" list.

Fewer electrics, no tires to go flat, goes anywhere, tough, easier to fix, easy to live in, diesel... I would, obviously, construct a better enclosure for the back. And that's a Pinzgauer, but it's close enough. That's the idea.

Somehow, I think if any of that were to come true, THIS would be the only viable form of transport left.

Anything gas powered would be rendered useless in probably less than year. Owing to diesel engines' far less fuel sensitivity they'd last longer based on existing fuel stocks but after a time they too would be useless. So, for the long term, Madman has it about right (but I hate horses).

I'm with John on this - you'd need go primitive: pre-electronics & pre-fuel-injection, something from the era when everything was over-engineered. Model T is good, WWII Jeep... or early Land Rover maybe.

Anyone remember the scene in "The Day After" when Jason Robards is driving a Volvo, which stops dead when it's hit by the EMP... & he sees the mushroom clouds in the distance... that was disturbing, I mean, Christ, if you can't rely on an early-80s Volvo, you might as well give up.

It'll take all of one's waking hours to survive as it was before the advent of the automobile.
