I was googling the interior of the Plymouth Acclaim and came across this. My first thought was "Holy shit..." then I was speecheless.  :tounge:

The interior reminds me of my grandmother's Acclaim, whilst the paint job reminds me of the time my buddy painted the dash panels of his Thunderbird yellow.

We've become spoiled with car interiors - to the point that we've become snobs. The custom paint job is tasteless, I admit, but the interior is what you'd expect of a car designed in the late 1980s.

My requirements for an interior: Can I manipulate the controls for HVAC/radio easily with gloves without taking my eyes off the road for very long? Will the controls work for the life of the car? Does it look reasonably acceptable? (no plaid seat pattern thanks) Are the seats comfy for driving?

The best Spirits/Acclaims were the ones with the Lotus developed 2.2L DOHC turbo engine (224hp!) and with the Chrysler turbo fours (150hp to start, but tons of potential).

Spoiled? Nah. Interiors are finally becoming acceptable. Looking at that Acclaim interior, it's amazing we put up with such garbage for so long. It's where you spend 95% of the time with your car, and to me, the design, ergonomics and materials should be held to a higher standard (or at least as high) as the rest of the vehicle.

It's sad, because the Dynasty's interior was so much better.




Then the Neon's interior blew it out of the water, and it by comparison to the competition wasn't all that great.

The dash you posted is an improvement upon Detroit iron from the late 70s/early 80s

Interiors have become better these days, but it also seems people keep demanding better interiors. The gap between luxury and mainstream car interiors is now so small it's getting pretty hard for luxury manufacturers to distinguish themselves from mainstream cars cabins.

Honestly, that Plymouth Volare interior looks GREAT compared to that Acclaim. I think American car interiors of the '70s are much better than the stuff that came out in the '80s.  :ohyeah:

I agree. I hope I am not blaspheming, but I have two friends, one with an Accord 6-6 coupe and one with a 335i coupe. The 335i coupe has been in the shop non stop since he got it, and while it's faster than the Accord and better handling it's not much nicer (if at all) as a daily driver. After seeing their experiences I would honestly go with the Accord over the 335i. Power, handling, history, heritage all mean nothing if you don't know whether or not your car's gonna get you to work today.

Not just American cars of that era. Japanese and Europeans were often as bad.

While it looks SLIGHTLY better, this Celica is all plastic, and tends to be real flimsy when you touch it, expecially that center console:

This is not much different than GM interiors of the day:







All plastic, and those two giant pods on either side of the steering wheel were flimsy and tended to break.

Also all plastic and didn't hold up well. Luxury cars were better, but average cars didnt' have to be, beceau we didn't expect average cars to be luxury cars.

It was. The problem is that we expect every car to be a luxury car. We think we are entitled to the highest quality at ALL price points, not just luxury price points. It's impractical and part of the reason that a mid size, mid level car now costs 30k instead of $4k, and it's NOT just inflation, but inflated expectations. Everyone has become a princess that cna't sleep due to a pea they feel under 10 mattresses. it's ridiculous.

All I need a dash to do in a basic car is hold functioning guages.
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

This is one of my favorite interiors (American) of the 80s. I know the motoring press hated it and labeled the digital dash Star Wars, but I loved it!  Maybe I'm slightly biased (see my avatar) but oh well!  :lol:

It's safe to say that plastic was very common in all car interiors in the day - even in luxury cars.

Old Benzes still have great interiors. What can't be conveyed in pictures is the feel + weight of controls. That's a place where the Germans were really ahead of the competiton
