That's pretty much what I did. I've an attachment on the drill for sandpaper, and stole a few grades of sandpaper from my wife ( she does glass and woodworking ). Worked better than any of those polishes they sell at Part Source/AutoZone/NAPA.

No need to, glass does not break down with exposure to UV radiation.

UV isn't the only thing that fogs/hazes the lenses.  Road debris (stone chips, "sandblasting" in the winter) will mark up the lenses too.

And while we're at it, bring back the sealed beams! Much cheaper to replace if one breaks.
