Don't spoil the kid now.
Not sure that would be considered spoiling him, or would it?

Older-ish car with some miles, but nothing horrific, and virtually an entry level 3 series.  I like them for him because it is not particularly fast but handles really well, has very good brakes and crash worthiness is best.  I want to know that my kids will walk away from most "normal" crashes they could encounter in everyday life.

Or is that spoiling a kid with something like that?  (seriously asking)

I was only kidding, since I didn't get a BMW.

As an added gift (Maybe for say for being responsible) give him some snow tires.  I hope it goes well since I'd hate having a nice car like that and have it start to have issues.  I'm sure he'll get flack from other kids, but if he's anything like you he won't give a fuck or maybe embrace it.  Hell people think I'm spoiled and I have a rusty Subaru.

I've never bought the 'ole not-real-Porsches thing. The 914, 928, 924, 944, 968, Panamera, and Cayanne are all real Porsches. Some of those aren't good Porsches, of course, but they aren't badge engineered (even the 924).

Don't get me wrong, the 924/944/968/928 are good cars, I would rock any of em. But none of em were badge jobs. Panamera, Cayenne, those are Volkswagens. Thats like calling the 500E a Porsche. Awesome excellent car, but not a Porschey Porsche

Not that it means much. An automatic 2.5 Cayman is a Porsche Porsche... but it's a really, really bad one

You're thinking of the Cayenne, and although they share platforms, the Cayenne isn't just a Touraeg in drag. There's quite a bit of difference between the two.

The Panamera IIRC has loose Audi A8 roots, but really, the Panamera is through-and-through a Porsche.

I doubt many kids would give him much flack considering his size, but I know that is not the intent of what you were saying.

Truth be told, he has his mothers spirit; kind hearted, sensitive, quiet and intelligent with a side order of nastiness mixed in here and there when appropriate such as on the playing field. He is honestly not very much like me at all, even though he looks like me.  I think that is actually why he and I get along so well, we compliment one another just as his mom and I do.

His brother and sister on the other hand, all me baby!  They wake up ready to throw down.

I will certainly take your thoughts under advisement when it is time to buy something for him as I do not want him to be the object of scorn because of his ride.  Appreciate your input, I guess I will have to start looking at what the other cars in the student lot are before I buy.

How old were you looking?  A used 3 is perfectly acceptable, but being a BMW it's just one of those cars that most kids think OMFG spoiled sob (Depending on the area, I guess) when really they are quite affordable.  (Like the Mustang and Eclipse at my school, everyone thinks they are the hottest things on the road)  A 3 series is perfectly fine and he'd love it, as long as it works.  How tall is he?

A 3 series would be really nice. They are good cars too. I would love a 330i.

But I think once we are settled I will take the 2 car approach. I pretty much have my mind made up on a ~10yr old Civic or Accord and an older S2000. Wifey can maybe get a 325i wagon. Oh man that would  be fckign perfect, and really not that expensive (~25K altogether?).

But if you can swing the gas I don't think you can go wrong w/an E46. Just teach the boy how to drive stickshift! BMW autos are supposedly problematic once the mileage climbs

We haven't had any problems with ours.

But I wouldn't recommend a BMW as a first car. If I drove ours every day it's almost guaranteed I would get busted for speeding about once a month. It's just too easy. They might not be super powerful, but like you said, they handle great and can carry speed with ease. 100 in a 3 series feels like 70 in other cars.

IMO, the 924 is kind of crappy, actually.

People really like to pigeonhole Porsche as only a maker of rear-engined performance cars, but it's a bit like saying that Toyota only ever makes boring family cars. While it is true that if Porsche stopped making rear-engine performance cars, they wouldn't be Porsche, they are allowed to make whatever they want and still call them Porsches, eh? Keep in mind that Porsche and VW have always had a close relationship. The origin of the company is basically VW. The 914 and 924 are very VW-y, and the 944/968 are based on the 924 (better engines, though, and better suspensions). Porsche making a car based on a VW is nothing new, and it doesn't make the car not-a-Porsche.

I'm wondering what it would take to change the firing order on a V8.

I've been studying them and have figured out why BMW V8s sound like butter, and old domestic V8s sound like ass (when not accelerating)

All about the firing order

Obviously it would take a custom cam... and maybe 4-1 headers to even things out... but even w/an old 5.0 EFI things are simple otherwise

LSx fit the bill but are so fucking expensive

Would love an E39 M5 sounding V8 in something like an old RX-7 or S14... ah one day. Just been thinking about builds I would love to tackle... that seems like the best of all worlds. Maybe an old Prelude for DD duty
