Could be a bad MAF sensor. Dunno.
You see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?!!

If the starter wasn't engaging, then you'd never get RPMs. I agree that that's what it sounds like, but it can't be the only problem.

Correct, I meant smack it so maybe the solenoid releases to let the gear go back to the "disengaged" position.

I believe the starter is messed up and staying "engaged", like others have stated. But you'd have to replace it to be sure.

And there is obviously a problem with it not staying running- could be flooded, bad spark, no fuel, whatever. My amateur totally nonprofessional GUESS is that it's flooded from trying to start it over and over..

But what came first- bad starter, or no-start which created the situation??

Did you get the damned thing started yet?

Step 1: Pull the CEL codes.
Step 2: Fix that shit.

Step 1 would be to find a place to work on the car, step two is to get some tools.

I think it's going to have to be towed. I can't even pull the spark plugs to unflood the engine and the battery is almost dead from trying to crank over the engine.

Pulling the codes is easy; finding a friend with a code reader is not. I wonder if one of the parts stores rents/loans them...

Anyway, if you have nowhere to work on the thing, and no way to get it somewhere else, then it's mechanic time.

Yeah, I guess we'll have to take it to a mechanic somehow. I was hoping it would be an easy fix though.

And we have to tow the damn thing to a mechanic now. :rage:

If it were a manual I would've just tried bump starting it, but that's a no go as well.

That's a great local brewery that we have. Do I drink their beer? No.

It would let the gas evaporate. Seems like a waste of time to me- you can start a flooded engine by mashing the gas as you crank it. (Sometimes)

Some cars there are cheap (free) ways to check the codes without a reader- Ford you put a paperclip into a port and then turn on the key the CEL blinks the code to you.  Dodge you can turn the key on/off 3 times it will blink the code...
