Volvo T5: Good Motor?

Colonel Cadillac

My dad used to switch between 87 and 93 octane when he piloted the old 850 T5 wagon. The engine eventually rejected it and some work needed to be done.

It's a pretty terrible idea to run a lower octane than recommended.  I don't care whether the car can supposedly cope with it or not.  I don't like taking my chances to save a dollar or two every week.

55,000 miles and counting, no problems.

I was referring to those that are acting like all engines that require premium will self destruct with the usage of regular.

I would definitely be more worried about a turbo engine, but frankly I wouldn't buy any Volvo if I was planning on keeping it too long.

CJ

I've had my 850 10,000 miles.  Bought it in May.  I bought it knowing it had a bad turbo and a coolant leak somewhere.  The turbo was fixed, and I found the coolant leak...just haven't fixed it.

I'm surprised the sands of time haven't ground it into a smooth pebble.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

CJ

Just saying that I've driven it quite a bit in the past 7 months.

Sounds nice there, too.
