This is how all the cars I've driven work (except for the 7, I have no idea how to use that ).

Pull back the iDrive knob. Then twist clockwise. Press right twice, turn left once, then make a clicking noise with your mouth, and finally press the knob in.

I prefer to not use cruise control.

I always turn it off anyways if I'm not using it.  The light bothers me.

I prefer having the light than not having it.  My Mustang doesn't have one to tell you the cruise is on, only the little green light that tells you that cruise is engaged.  If you happen to cancel the cruise for some reason, you have nothing but your memory to tell you that it's simply inactive and not completely off.
