Remember, this platform is eventually going to (in a premium version most likely) supplant the Euro Passat and a bunch of other vehicles.

VW wouldn't design a platform exclusively for one car that's only sold in North America and China.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

I don't care about all that shit.  I'll be going to college to get an education at a cost to my parents.  I'm not going to fool around.

.....so what does that have to do with the fact the transmission hump is too big? Do the Chinese like big humps?

AWD version maybe later? Crossover?

Most midsize cars have an AWD option and the hump isn't this large.

Most midsize cars have some sort of CUV based upon them and the hump isn't this big.

Laconian

Even still, that doesn't warrant such a massive hump.

My VW cynicism ("omg we needs to make money$ without really working hard!") tells me that it's a cost savings measure. Perhaps it's a way to make the floorpan stiffer with crappier steel?

Still, this car is huge -- like Ford 500/last gen Taurus huge. I don't think a hump -- a hump, a hump, a hump. A lovely VW lump...is going to make or break sales. And the old Passat had one, too.

No, only a handful do.

That's what I was thinking.  It's a cheap and easy way to add rigidity to the floorpan, at the expense of cabin space.

Well, there's certainly plenty of room under that tunnel to do it!  If they wanted to spin a rear-drive model off this platform, that hump looks big enough to fit a rear-mounted transmission in front of the axle.  Think Maserati Quattroporte.  Hmmm, a rear drive Passat with perfect 50/50 weight distribution?  That would go a long way to make this dullard of a car a lot more interesting!

I don't care, I just feel very bad when I see a R36 model on the street. It's funny cause I see a R36 almost every day, while another V6 only a few a month, even less.

Why didn't they have the R36 when I bought mine    :rage:  :banghead:

Ah, so many of them ... why can't be one, just one, mine?

Okay, back to the hump:

Yes, that's the new European version. In fact, near as I can tell, every Passat has had a similar hump since 2006. It's hard to tell though, because of the convenient angle of most of VW's rear seat photos.

Like I said, I've sat in the car. I've caressed it. I've been let down by the materials in the interior and the build quality.

But I have to admit: It's fucking huge inside.

To be honest, not really. It's pretty much on-par with the Camry. The Accord's a little better. Somehow materials got cheaper across the board in all of the newer midsize sedans except for the Fusion.

I don't think they'll sell many even though it seems to have what the market wants.

It's exactly what the people want. It's an average car in every single way. It's so beige, it isn't even funny. It's an alienation of German spunk for Korean value and American size.

It's not a bad car. Is it a little disappointing? Sure. Having driven the old 2.0T, I can say that engine is pretty much awesome. Replacing it with a 5-pot is t3h suck. But I was never the biggest fan of the B6 Passat, and apparently most of the market wasn't, either.

I'd say it really competes with the last gen Taurus/500, which was an incredibly underrated car. And it's biggest selling point is one that VDub has lacked for a while now in a lot of areas: value.

I have not seen the US Passat (obviously) but if anyone really think that Camry and Accord (or Fusion) have better interiour materials then the B6 Passat (2006 - 2010) then ....  :banghead:  :hammerhead:  :nono:

Yes, the sad truth is the typical brain-dead American consumer likes their cars big and cheap and to hell with anything else.  (Driving dynamics?  Duh, what's that?)  This car scores on both those counts.  The fact I hate it means they'll probably sell loads.

Atomic

obvious styling cues from honda (accord) and ford's fusion... it looks okay, i guess... must see one on person. the new vw jetta gli makes up for the base jetta's conservative styling, i think. the passat may have a trick up it's sleeve.

The prob with this logic, as I said before, is that the people already have the choices of the dozens of other vanilla cars on the market. This car doesn't stand out in any category, and w/o the brand equity of Toyota or Honda, will suffer for it.

LOL, VW ME will sell the US-made Passat in the region. After dropping the Phaeton and the Polo, with the US Passat joining in (instead of the German model), now they have a totally NA market passanger cars line-up, complete with most of the Golf sold being actually GTI. Ok, maybe the only difference is the presence of the Scirocco.  :wtf:
