37 highway? What the hell was up with the EPA ratings at that time?

It was probably the upper range of the highway estimate, not the main number. Fueleconomy.gov doesn't list an '84 Caravan that topped 30 mpg even under the old methodology.

Indeed it was so revolutionary, the 1984 Plymouth Voyager was billed as the "Magic Wagon" since the term "Minivan" didn't yet exist!

I want to invent a time machine just so I can go back and slap him in the face.

I think I'll call these magic wagons now.

They really are magic. I moved my entire house in a 1992 variety, and it was good on the Autobahn for much more than the 100mph speedo.

I've never been fond of the term "minivan".  First of all, today's minivans are hardly "mini".  The British term "People Carrier" is also inadequate since these vehicles carry much more than just people.  Besides, aren't all cars technically "people carriers" in one form or another?  MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) is also a flawed term since this can be used to describe a variety of different types of vehicles.

Personally, I prefer the French term for what we call minivans: "Monospace" (One Space).  After all, a minivan is essentially one big space which can be configured to carry endless combinations of people and cargo.  Yeah, that's what we should call them.  All hail "Les Monospaces!"

"First of all, today's minivans are hardly 'mini'."

They are compared to full-size vans, which is what the term was originally coined to distinguish them from.
