Of course there was a four-door LTD. There was even a station wagon.

Onslaught

Let me know when they do an import one. Then I'll give a crap.

I've only ever seen that LTD generation as a COUPE, never as a sedan/wagon. It's hot though! I'd tap that.

i need a refresher course, as the thunderbirds (coupes/sedans), LTDs (for limited), fairlaines, galaxy 500's, grand torino elites, etc. look familiar, despite varying between model years and even when overlapping.

Yeah, I'd wager more than 80% of those sold were.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

NOW!

I didn't think of breaking it down by year and model trim, so my guesses were way of, but here they are.

1: Ford Explorer
2: Ford Mustang
3: Chevy Impala
4; Lincoln Town Car
5: Ford Escort
6:Buick Park Avenue (it seems wrong, but I see many, many of these on the road)
7:Dodge Caravan
8 Chevy Vega (I swear, at one time these were thick as flies)
9: Chrysler New Yorker
10: Ford LTD/LTD II

great list 'coupe  :ohyeah: i wonder what the numbers would be if the chrysler town & country and plymouth voyager were added to those of the dodge caravan and grand caravan. however, many of the similar cars sold by the same corporations (i.e., ford-mercury, buick-olds) could argue the same coupling.

Yeah, that's the part I have trouble seperating. In my mind. all Chrysler corporation Minivans should be under the same heading, and if they were, they'd account for a huge percentage of cars sold.

exactly. a mixed blessing for chrysler and something faced by all u.s. manufacturers at one time or another with "badge engineering". mixed blessing? yes, due to large profits with millions sold. also, they were until recently nearly identical. examining both chrysler T&C (limited edition) and dodge grand caravan ("man van R/T edition) for MY11, the differences are far more substantial. still, the next generation of minivans from chrysler corp. are to be two very distinct vehicles.

That's an LTD II, which is a completely different car from the "Full Size" LTD.  The LTD II was actually Ford's "mid-size" car and was essentially an updated Torino.  Since the LTD and LTD II were two different cars, they should not be counted together.

great point! was there two mirror models from mercury, as well?

Yes.  The full-sized LTD spawned the Mercury Marquis (The Grand Marquis was introduced in 1975 as a trim level) and the mid-sized LTD II gave birth to the badge-engineered Mercury Cougar.  Yes, there was actually a four-door Cougar and even a Cougar Villager station wagon!

It should also be noted that the 1977-79 Ford Thunderbird was basically just a two-door LTD II with a different grille and covered headlamps.  Also, in the late '70s, the town I grew up in used Ford LTD II police cars, which I thought was rather strange.

From the Spotted Today thread, a Ford LTD II Coupe I spotted about a month ago.

Note the similarities to the Ford Thunderbird.

And the Mercury Cougar.

Those LTD II's are still sexy. Really dig that boxy styling. I find those cars have a design character so absent from cars today.  :praise:

great info from "Madman" (above) and yes, i, too, love those older designs. you like the fords and mercury's? ahh... the lincoln's were even sweeter  that is what makes the line-up of today's top ford division so depressing. times are changing, but it seems like FMC is doing nicely with its ford division, but lacking when it comes to lincoln. check out some of those old lincoln continentals, mark series, town cars, etc. there were even four door "marks" and ford t-birds. cool :)

Wow.  I wouldn't own a single car on that list.

Love those '60s, '70s and '80s Cadillacs and Lincolns and other American cars from that era ('50s to of course). And I agree the current designs of Lincoln and Cadillac just don't speak to me because they have lost that glitz glam that their counterparts had - even in the '80s.
